Now YouTube has solved this problem by adding the option to set a 4-digit PIN. The feature is built directly into YouTube on Smart TVs, and setting it up requires just a few simple steps:
- Open the YouTube app on your TV and go to your account in the navigation menu on the left
- Select the “Settings” button under your account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enable account lock and set a 4-digit code. The code you create will only work on this device.
The next time you try to access your profile on the TV, you’ll be prompted to enter your PIN either on the TV or through the YouTube mobile app installed on your smartphone. If you choose the second option, you’ll receive a push notification for authentication. Additionally, you can use a dedicated portal to track which devices are using your account.

If you’ve forgotten your PIN, select “Forgot your PIN?” on the screen and verify your identity using your Google account credentials. The service emphasizes that this is only a local privacy protection measure; it does not affect your regular Google account password in any way and is not used for authentication in other products.
This is a smart solution that lets you comfortably use YouTube on any device without worrying that your app history will be accessible to others. Previously, the best solution would have been to create a separate Google account for shared use and to use that specific account on the Smart TV that the whole family uses.
