As on-premises AI models become increasingly capable, AI agents are able to perform more tasks directly on the computer. This makes it possible to store sensitive data on the device while automating complex workflows.
Portable Computer is a local version of the Perplexity Computer agent, capable of independently planning and executing multi-step tasks. Thanks to NVIDIA GPU acceleration, the system can analyze data locally, combine information from various files, and perform routine operations. Confidential information remains on the device, and tasks executed locally do not consume Perplexity Computer credits. If necessary, the user can also delegate the execution of individual stages to cloud-based models if the task requires more complex analysis or reasoning.
Perplexity has now added Portable Computer to the Perplexity app for Windows. The feature is available on compatible PCs with NVIDIA GeForce RTX, as well as on NVIDIA RTX PRO workstations. This makes the powerful capabilities of AI agents accessible to a wider range of Windows users. Support had previously been introduced for NVIDIA DGX Spark systems and Linux-based RTX PCs.
Perplexity combines local and cloud-based AI capabilities within a single application. This allows users to work with confidential files directly on their PC while utilizing Portable Computer’s built-in tools, including a browser and its own isolated SPACE sandbox environment. If a specific task requires more complex reasoning capabilities, Portable Computer can determine the need for cloud processing. The system prompts the user for permission before transferring information outside the device.
Setup is also as simple as possible: Perplexity uses a local model – specifically, Qwen 3.8 27B – which has been fine-tuned for use with Perplexity Computer and optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs. Therefore, users do not need to search for a suitable model on their own or deal with the complex software stack required to run local AI systems. Support for connectors for Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, and GitHub allows the agent’s capabilities to be extended to files and applications that users already use in their daily work.
For example, in engineering tasks, the agent can review open pull requests in a connected GitHub project, categorize them by status, and determine next steps. Computer is also capable of identifying outdated documentation and preparing suggested updates for further review.
For financial tasks, a user can provide Computer with two years’ worth of brokerage statements, consolidated Form 1099s, and tax returns. The agent will be able to analyze these documents, identify the assets that consistently generate the highest avoidable commission costs and tax burden, and provide links to the exact file and page where each figure is located. At the same time, no document leaves the device or is transferred to the chatbot.
For startups, Computer may, for example, receive a request to determine why the activation rate has stopped growing. The agent analyzes the funnel data export locally, identifies the stage at which new users most often drop off – between installation and completing the first task – and then publishes key findings directly to the team’s Slack channel.
Portable Computer is available for NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs equipped with at least 24 GB of video memory. Support for the NVIDIA DGX Station is planned to be added in the near future.
