AMD and Anthropic have announced the launch of a strategic partnership that calls for the deployment of up to two gigawatts of computing power based on the latest AMD Instinct MI450 series graphics accelerators. The equipment will be integrated into AMD Helios rack-mounted systems, and the initial deployment of the first gigawatt is scheduled for the first half of 2027.

This decision was driven by the explosive growth in demand for AI training and response generation systems. Developer Anthropic is actively expanding its infrastructure due to the immense popularity of its Claude language model, so the transition to gigawatt-scale AMD Helios capacity significantly strengthens the semiconductor giant’s position at the heart of the global IT network architecture.

Anthropic’s new infrastructure will be based on AMD Helios modules featuring AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs (part of the MI450 series), AMD EPYC server CPUs from the Venice family, AMD Pensando networking solutions, and the ROCm software stack. This update is a direct continuation of their previous collaboration, during which Anthropic had already been using AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators.

In addition to purchasing hardware, the partners are launching a multi-year engineering project in which the AI assistant Claude will help AMD developers optimize software. Claude will optimize workloads for Instinct graphics cards and accelerate the development of the ROCm platform, while AMD itself intends to actively integrate Claude into the work of its engineering and product divisions.

As part of the agreement, AMD also announced its intention to make a strategic equity investment in Anthropic, which could reach $5 billion in the future.

AMD CEO and Chair of the Board of Directors Lisa Su expressed her enthusiasm for deepening the collaboration with Anthropic, emphasizing that combining the solutions of a global AI leader with her company’s high-performance systems will enable Helios to become a key foundation for next-generation IT infrastructure. For his part, Anthropic co-founder and Chief Computing Officer Tom Brown noted that access to computing power is critical for keeping Claude at the cutting edge of progress, and that using a broad range of hardware allows tasks to be efficiently distributed across the appropriate hardware nodes.

Representatives from both sides emphasize that the alliance creates a long-term foundation for deploying cutting-edge AI systems. At the same time, investors are reminded of standard financial risks, regulatory constraints, potential fluctuations in component prices, and competition in the semiconductor market, all of which could affect the actual timeline and outcomes of this large-scale project.
