NASA officials announced the signing of an agreement with Blue Origin to design a Martian telecommunications network. The company has signed a contract worth up to $700 million to build a high-performance communications satellite for the space agency by December 31, 2028. Once launched, this satellite will transmit scientific data, images, navigation data, and critical communications for spacecraft operating on the surface and in orbit around the Red Planet.
The agency is currently implementing the Artemis program to explore the Moon. Although progress has been slow, a crewed flight was successfully conducted earlier this year, and the experience gained will serve as the foundation for future missions to send astronauts to Mars. Increased data volumes are essential for NASA’s continued progress toward this goal, so a reliable communication channel between Mars and Earth is crucial.
The new spacecraft will be based on satellite platforms that Blue Origin has already been developing for Mars exploration, specifically for NASA’s ESCAPADE scientific project. To ensure maximum data transmission speeds, the implementation of laser-based optical communications alongside traditional radio frequencies is being considered. This will enable the transmission of high-definition video, 3D surface maps, and vast amounts of scientific data, surpassing the capabilities of current orbital stations such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. In addition to preparing for crewed missions, the satellite will serve as a relay for future commercial and government rovers and landers.
The signing of this agreement also demonstrates NASA’s commitment to diversifying its service providers and reducing its reliance on SpaceX. While Elon Musk’s company focuses on transportation, Blue Origin is strengthening its position in the space infrastructure and telecommunications sectors.
However, Blue Origin has already collaborated with the space agency, having received a contract in early 2026 to manufacture lunar landers. In May, Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket program suffered a setback due to an explosion at the launch site. Although Blue Origin’s CEO assured that restoration work would be completed by the end of 2026, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman predicted that the launch site would remain inoperative until 2028. This has raised many questions among analysts regarding the company’s ability to meet the space agency’s tight deadlines.
