Huawei has officially unveiled the MatePad Pro Max at the global Now Is Your Spark event in Bangkok. The key feature of the device has already been confirmed – its thickness is 4.7 mm, making it the thinnest flagship tablet in the company’s portfolio. At the same time, the positioning sounds no less ambitious: Huawei is promoting the model as a full-fledged alternative to a laptop, not just a productivity tool. This is the most significant release of a Huawei tablet since the MatePad Pro 13.2.

MatePad Pro Max officially debuted at a global presentation in Bangkok along with Nova 15 Max and the Watch Fit 5 series. The 4.7 mm thickness was confirmed through a teaser in X, allowing the new product to surpass the MatePad Mini with its 5.1-5.2 mm, which was previously considered the brand’s thinnest tablet. The press release also confirmed the use of a PaperMatte display with a nano-etch surface to reduce glare and create the effect of writing on paper. From the teasers, we know about a 13.2-inch screen, 3.55 mm thick bezels, and a front-facing camera integrated into the body. A full list of specifications is expected immediately after the event in Bangkok. Huawei is clearly positioning the MatePad Pro Max as a laptop alternative with PC-level multitasking and HarmonyOS productivity capabilities.

Achieving a thickness of 4.7 mm requires serious engineering solutions. For comparison, the iPad Pro is 5.1 mm thick, and Honor’s MagicPad 3 Pro 12.3 is 4.82 mm. The MatePad Pro Max surpasses both, and this result is even more impressive given the large display rather than the compact format.

A large screen, a battery of sufficient capacity, and a full-fledged hardware platform in a body of less than 5 mm is possible only through the use of silicon-carbon batteries, aggressive miniaturization of components, or a combination of these approaches. The previous MatePad Pro 13.2 PaperMatte has already demonstrated an engineering level with a thickness of 5.5 mm. The reduction of almost 1 mm in the premium segment forms the key technical story of this model.

PaperMatte technology is one of the main differentiating factors. It is based on nano-level etching of the display surface, which reduces glare and virtually eliminates light interference. As a result, the screen remains comfortable to read even in bright light and provides a more natural writing experience with the M-Pencil stylus, reducing the slippage and glare that is inherent in ordinary glass during prolonged use.

The MatePad Pro 13.2 PaperMatte, which was launched globally for under $1,270, received positive reviews thanks to this technology. The Pro Max version builds on this foundation with a thinner body and Huawei’s most ambitious performance software stack.

The company is systematically moving towards positioning tablets as a replacement for laptops for several generations. The MatePad Pro Max supports keyboard accessories, provides PC-level multitasking in the HarmonyOS environment, and offers integration with other devices in the Huawei ecosystem, including smartphones and computers. The real ability to completely replace a laptop depends primarily on the software. HarmonyOS has significantly closed the gap, but is still inferior to Windows in professional scenarios.

For content creators, students, and professionals already working in Huawei’s ecosystem, this offer looks convincing. For a wider audience, the key factor will be the actual experience of using the software after launch.
