The incredibly popular and always busy Keanu Reeves will lend his voice to the main character of the dynamic film, which is based on the biography of a real Japanese artist named Jingoro Hidari. If you’re a fan of stop-motion cinematography, samurai themes, or Keanu Reeves’ acting, then the upcoming feature film Hidari is definitely worth your attention, as the star actor has just officially agreed to play a key role in it.
The director and screenwriter of this film is Masashi Kawamura, who is turning his 2023 short samurai film of the same name into a large-scale movie about Jingoro Hidari. In the real story, this Edo-era man had many versatile talents, successfully proving himself as a sculptor, architect, and humorist. However, Kawamura’s feature film is only remotely based on historical accounts of the master.
In the film version, the protagonist will appear as a vigilante seeking revenge for the deaths of his foster father and beloved bride, as well as for the loss of his own right arm. Replacing the amputated limb with various mechanical prostheses, Hidari and his wooden companion, known as Sleeping Cat, go on a hunt for the perpetrators of the tragedy, trying to find out how all these events are connected to the large-scale restoration of Edo Castle.
In an official press statement, Keanu Reeves emphasized that the project’s creative team managed to realize something incredible, going from the initial visual concept to a full-fledged finished script. According to the actor, the upcoming film has absolutely all the signs of an extraordinary movie, which he himself is very eager to see and is very enthusiastic about creating. Keanu Reeves also expressed his belief that this idea is able to give unique impressions to viewers around the world.
For his part, Masashi Kawamura admitted that he is incredibly excited about the opportunity to work on the same set with a Hollywood star. The director noted that when a professional with such a vast experience and artistic vision evaluates your demo and expresses a desire to join the process, it evokes incredible emotions. Kawamura added that Keanu Reeves is not just going to voice the main character, but is also actively helping to develop and detail this fictional universe, which is why the director is eager to see the fruits of their joint work as soon as possible.
