OPPO has revealed details about the photography capabilities and new AI tools in the Reno16 series of smartphones. OPPO is constantly striving to provide device owners around the world with convenient tools for creating content and bringing their ideas to life.
When evaluating the photography capabilities of the Reno lineup, OPPO aims not only to guarantee flawless results through its Ultra-Clear Camera System but also to offer a wide range of AI-powered features. By monitoring popular trends and actively engaging with audiences around the world, previously introduced tools, such as AI Flash Photography for flash photography and AI Motion Photo Popout for highlighting objects in live photos, have gained widespread recognition.
The Reno16 series devices, equipped with the best-in-class Ultra-Clear Camera System, make it easy to capture striking photos. The 200 MP main camera on the Reno16 Pro preserves maximum clarity and detail even after zooming in or cropping a photo. At the same time, the 50 MP portrait telephoto module optically separates the subject from the background to create a harmonious composition, allowing you to capture deep and narrative-driven portraits. Paired with this is a 50 MP ultra-wide-angle front camera that helps convey genuine emotions and a unique style in every selfie.
The developers sought to simplify the creation of stylized shots while preserving the sense of immersion and a special ritual in the creative process. To achieve this goal, the Reno16 smartphones now feature the Pop Cam option. Designed as a separate mode within the “Camera” app, Pop Cam includes 9 special filters. They recreate the distinctive aesthetics of legendary cameras: Instant Film adds vintage tones and analog grain, Digicam replicates the soft lighting effect of CCD sensors, and Light Leak creates warm light reflections. To highlight your own style, all it takes is a single tap – and the tool even works with live photos (motion photos).
When applying retro camera effects to live photos, maintaining smooth frame progression was a challenge. To solve this problem, experts refined the dynamic frame fusion algorithm, which improved temporal continuity and ensured stable motion reproduction even in complex exposure scenarios involving a flash.
Another challenge was ensuring the consistent performance of stylistic effects in low-light conditions. Thanks to extensive development of AI Flash Photography technology, a solid foundation was established for the Pop Cam feature. Based on the Dual 2020 Flash system, the updated AI Flash Photography 3.0 technology guarantees more powerful lighting with three adjustment levels, expanding the range of scenarios for capturing high-quality portraits. The feature also controls exposure levels while preserving natural skin tones.
Given the importance of post-processing in modern content, the Reno series expands its core AI tools, making the editing process engaging. For example, the Reno15 series introduced the AI Motion Photo Popout feature for creating interactive collages. The new Reno16 series builds on this with the AI Remix Collage feature. By setting an image or video as the background, users can add live photos and videos as animated stickers using the AI Motion Cutout tool. Thanks to AI Remix Collage, users can create original animated collages without needing third-party apps.
Whether it’s everyday moments like breakfasts and sunsets or major events such as graduations, trips, or K-pop concerts, AI Remix Collage lets you weave pleasant memories into your own story. By creating interactions between details and their surroundings, AI Remix Collage becomes a convenient tool for expressing emotions.
To ensure accurate object segmentation (motion matting) in motion, the key challenge was aligning multiple consecutive frames. When details overlap or change position, standard processing causes visual glitches. To solve this problem, the team developed a temporal modeling approach combined with an adaptive blending system. This technology aligns data across frames, ensuring smooth and consistent motion. In addition, an AI-based encoding system with edge-cloud collaboration accelerates processing while maintaining high detail. The adaptive multi-branch architecture reduces interference when working with multiple elements simultaneously, ensuring high accuracy in object segmentation from video.
These technological solutions have also been integrated into the Popout 2.0 feature. It now supports the pop-out effect in all directions, and its recognition capabilities cover people, animals, architecture, and everyday objects.
In response to the demand for convenient editing, the Reno16 series now features a dedicated “Create” tab in the “Photos” app. Based on user feedback, shortcuts to popular tools are pinned at the top, while recommended features are listed below. All it takes is a single tap to get started. Having all the tools in one place makes editing faster and more intuitive, encouraging users to create their own content.
