Today, I’m taking an in-depth look at the new OPPO Reno16 5G, a compact smartphone that combines a premium design with a capable camera system. “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. The model I received for review is the OPPO Reno16 5G. It is the base model in the new lineup, positioned between the more affordable Reno16 F and the flagship Reno16 Pro. I spent enough time with it to find out whether OPPO has once again managed to strike the balance between style, performance, and photography that has long been a defining characteristic of the Reno series.

With the OPPO Reno16 5G, the company continues its focus on compactness – something that has become increasingly rare in the Android smartphone market. Most manufacturers are chasing larger displays and bigger battery capacities, seemingly overlooking users who simply find a more compact phone easier to hold and use with one hand. The Reno16 5G is aimed precisely at this audience. It combines a relatively compact body with a capable hardware platform based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, which is powerful enough for everyday tasks, multimedia, and mobile gaming.
The model’s standout feature is its triple-camera system, which puts the focus not only on the main sensor but also on a full-fledged periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom. This is uncommon for a smartphone in this class. The setup provides greater flexibility when shooting portraits and distant subjects, while the ultrawide camera rounds out the package for landscapes and group shots. The 50MP front-facing camera is equally noteworthy, aimed at delivering high-quality selfies and video calls.
Another strong point of the smartphone is its display. The 6.32-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 1,800 nits delivers a smooth, high-contrast image, which is particularly noticeable when gaming or watching video.
Combined with OPPO’s distinctive “3D Pop Planet” rear design and IP69K protection, the Reno16 5G positions itself as one of the more interesting options in its price segment. At the same time, the smartphone does not try to compete on specifications alone. In my view, its key advantage is the balance it strikes between ergonomics, camera capabilities, performance, and chassis durability.
Battery life is another important strength. The 6,700mAh battery, combined with support for 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging, provides long-lasting use without frequent recharging, while a full charge from 1% to 100% can be completed in less than an hour.
The OPPO Reno16 5G is aimed at users who do not want to pay a premium for flagship status but still expect modern hardware and features. The model focuses on a combination of performance, photo and video capabilities, and thoughtful design, offering enough headroom not only for everyday use but also for more demanding scenarios.

So, I received a compact smartphone with a flagship-level camera setup and a modern Qualcomm platform. It’s time to share my impressions from testing the OPPO Reno16 5G.

What’s in the Box
The OPPO Reno16 5G box follows the series’ signature design language. The sturdy cardboard construction, clean and understated layout, and large “16” printed on the lid all contribute to the distinctive Reno series aesthetic from OPPO.
After removing the top lid, you’ll find the smartphone itself, with the included accessories neatly arranged underneath. Unlike the previous Reno15 model, OPPO has brought the charger back into the box with this generation.
The smartphone now comes with an original 80W SUPERVOOC power adapter, a USB-A to USB-C cable, a SIM ejector tool, printed documentation, and a warranty card.
A pleasant surprise is the transparent protective case included in the box, providing basic protection for the phone right out of the box. Although, I have to admit, covering such a beautiful design with a case feels like a bit of a shame.
The display, as expected, comes with a pre-applied protective film.

Premium Design
Design has traditionally been one of the main reasons for the attention the OPPO Reno series receives, and the Reno16 5G continues that approach. This is a smartphone that does not try to impress solely with an oversized camera module or overly aggressive styling. Its strengths remain the combination of a comfortable form factor, refined construction, and a truly distinctive rear-panel design.
The most distinctive design element is the 3D Pop Planet Design. In the Pop White version, the rear panel initially appears simple and understated: a clean light color, a glass surface, and minimal visual clutter. However, tilt the smartphone slightly under the light, and a three-dimensional pattern emerges beneath the glass, resembling a small planet suspended under a transparent surface. Depending on the viewing angle and the light source, the pattern changes in depth, reflections, and overall appearance.
According to OPPO, this effect is created by its HoloVerse 3D technology. A multilayer structure with millions of microlenses produces not a conventional printed pattern, but rather the illusion of depth beneath the glass. This is not a functional advantage in the traditional sense, but details like this give the device a distinct character. At a time when many smartphones differ primarily in the shape of their camera modules, the Reno16 5G feels more distinctive.
The phone’s compact form factor also deserves special attention. With a 6.32-inch display, the Reno16 5G feels remarkably comfortable compared with today’s smartphones, which increasingly come with much larger screens.
The Reno16 5G does not feel small in a negative sense, as the 6.32-inch display is more than sufficient for scrolling through feeds, viewing photos and videos, and handling everyday tasks.
At the same time, the phone does not feel bulky or difficult to use with one hand. For those who are tired of 6.7–6.9-inch smartphones, this could be one of the Reno16 5G’s key advantages.
The phone features flat side edges without feeling overly angular or harsh. The smoothly rounded corners and gentle transitions between the frame and rear panel make the grip feel natural: the smartphone does not dig into your palm and does not feel excessively slippery.
Depending on the color variant, the phone is 8.22–8.36 mm thick and weighs 182–193 g. It is not exceptionally thin, but these dimensions seem like a reasonable compromise given the inclusion of an optically stabilized telephoto lens.
The aviation-grade aluminum frame adds a reassuring sense of durability to the construction. The smartphone does not feel heavy or bulky, yet it feels solid and well put together in the hand.
The front panel is almost entirely occupied by the display, with slim bezels. The claimed 93.4% screen-to-body ratio gives the phone a modern, clean look without unnecessary visual distractions.
The camera module has also been redesigned. It now features three large lenses, including a periscope telephoto lens, giving it a more mature and cohesive appearance than previous models in the series. Importantly, the camera bump does not look like a separate component simply attached to the body. Thanks to OPPO’s “cold molding” technology, the transition between the module and the rear panel is smoother, making the overall design feel more integrated.
In everyday use, the slightly matte feel of the glass back adds a practical touch. Fingerprints are less noticeable, especially on the lighter Pop White version, while the surface provides a more secure grip than glossy glass. The color options also allow users to choose the character of the device. Pop White is well suited to those who appreciate a clean, distinctive design, Twilight Violet has a more understated appearance, while Dream Purple adds more color without becoming overly bright.
Another important aspect is the phone’s durability. According to the manufacturer, the Reno16 5G carries IP69K, IP69, IP68, and IP66 ratings, meaning it is designed to withstand not only accidental splashes or brief immersion in water, but also exposure to high-pressure water jets. That said, water resistance does not make the smartphone completely impervious to damage, so deliberate immersion or washing the device should not become a regular practice.

Ports and Ergonomics
In everyday use, the OPPO Reno16 5G also impresses with the logical placement of its physical controls. The power button and separate volume controls are located on the right side. They are positioned exactly where you would expect them to be: with a natural grip, your thumb falls comfortably on the power button, while the volume controls are easy to reach without stretching or repositioning the phone in your hand.
The buttons have a short, crisp travel and a distinct tactile response. They are easy to distinguish by touch, so accidental presses are unlikely during everyday use.
On the opposite side, there is a dedicated AI Snap Key, a new addition to the Reno series. By default, it is assigned to AI-related functions. A short press starts a screen recording, a long press creates a voice note, while a double press opens AI Mind Space. However, its main advantage is not the set of default actions, but the ability to assign a custom function.
For example, I configured the Snap Key to instantly switch the phone to silent mode. In this scenario, the button becomes a genuinely useful tool rather than yet another key you have to learn to ignore.
The bottom edge houses the main interfaces: a USB Type-C port, the primary speaker, a microphone, and the SIM card tray. There is no traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. This is a common compromise in modern smartphones, requiring users to rely on wireless headphones or a USB-C adapter.
The top edge houses a secondary microphone, the second speaker for stereo sound, and an infrared port. The latter can be useful for controlling household appliances, while the stereo speaker setup delivers noticeably fuller sound when watching videos, playing games, or using speakerphone.
OPPO Reno16 5G Display
The OPPO Reno16 5G features a 6.32-inch Crystal Guard AMOLED display with a resolution of 2640 × 1216 pixels and a pixel density of around 460 ppi. As a result, text, icons, photos, and videos look exceptionally sharp. I particularly liked that individual pixels are virtually impossible to distinguish, even when viewing the display up close.
The relatively compact display size is more of an advantage by today’s standards. The smartphone is comfortable to use with one hand, while the screen still provides ample space for social media, web browsing, video, and gaming. The panel is flat, the bezels are slim, and the front-facing camera occupies only a small punch-hole at the top of the display.
The refresh rate of up to 120Hz makes the interface noticeably smoother. Web pages, social media feeds, and menus scroll without stuttering, while system animations feel natural and responsive. At the same time, the smartphone can automatically lower the refresh rate when maximum smoothness is not required, helping conserve battery power. The touch sampling rate of up to 240Hz also contributes to faster touch response, particularly in fast-paced games.
Another strong point of the display is its peak brightness of up to 1,800 nits. In practice, this means the screen remains clearly readable outdoors, even on a sunny day, making it easy to check messages, use maps, or take photos. Automatic brightness adjustment also works effectively, quickly adapting to the surrounding light conditions.
The AMOLED panel supports 10-bit color depth, DCI-P3 coverage, and HDR10+. Colors look rich without appearing overly vivid, while blacks are genuinely deep. These qualities are particularly noticeable when watching movies and TV shows or viewing photos.
For improved eye comfort, OPPO uses a combination of DC dimming and PWM dimming, depending on the selected brightness level. This is intended to reduce eye strain during extended reading sessions or smartphone use in the evening. The display can also be operated with wet fingers, a small but genuinely useful feature that can come in handy in everyday situations.

Unlocking Methods
The OPPO Reno16 5G offers the familiar set of unlocking options for a mid-range smartphone: an in-display fingerprint scanner and facial recognition using the front-facing camera. In practice, both methods work reliably, so you are unlikely to encounter any issues.
The fingerprint scanner responds quickly and consistently, and its placement is convenient for thumb access. I did not notice any issues when using it with damp fingers. Facial recognition works almost instantly in well-lit conditions, although, as usual, it remains a less secure method of protection than the fingerprint scanner.

How About the Sound?
The multimedia experience on the OPPO Reno16 5G is complemented by stereo speakers. They deliver enough volume for comfortable YouTube viewing, podcasts, music, and speakerphone calls, even in noisy environments.
The sound has a noticeable stereo effect, with good channel separation that makes audio feel more immersive in movies and games. Naturally, the Reno16 5G cannot compete with premium flagships in terms of bass depth and overall detail, but it sounds convincing for its class. Most importantly, the speakers retain their clarity and definition even at high volume.
The smartphone also performs well during phone calls. The earpiece is loud and clear, without sounding muffled, making it easy to hear the other person even outdoors or on public transport. The primary and secondary microphones work together to capture your voice more clearly and reduce the impact of ambient noise. As a result, speech remains intelligible not only in quiet environments but also in typical urban conditions.
In speakerphone mode, the dual-speaker setup becomes particularly useful: the other person’s voice sounds clearer and does not get lost in the background. The microphones are also well suited to recording voice messages, video, and online calls, capturing speech clearly without excessive harshness.
The X-axis linear vibration motor also leaves a positive impression. The haptic feedback is crisp, brief, and easy to feel. This is noticeable when typing, using gestures, and receiving system notifications. It may not directly affect the smartphone’s specifications, but it makes everyday interaction feel more refined and cohesive.

Connectivity and Wireless Features
The OPPO Reno16 5G supports dual SIM, Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi, NFC for contactless payments, and modern 5G mobile networks.
In everyday use, the smartphone maintains a stable connection: calls, mobile data, and wireless devices work reliably without any noticeable issues.
OPPO also highlights its AI LinkBoost 4.0 technology. It is designed to automatically improve connection quality in crowded locations, such as train stations, concerts, or shopping malls. Its impact is difficult to assess precisely under everyday conditions, but during testing I did not experience sudden signal drops, data-transfer issues, or problems loading content on more congested networks.

OPPO Reno16 5G Hardware
The OPPO Reno16 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, manufactured using a 4nm process. It is not a flagship chipset designed to set benchmark records, but for a smartphone in this class, it offers a very good balance between performance, battery efficiency, and thermal management.
In my configuration, the processor is paired with 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256 GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage. The difference is immediately noticeable in everyday use. Apps launch quickly, switching between them is smooth, and the system does not start to slow down even after several hours of active use.
The smartphone handles typical everyday tasks with confidence: browsing with numerous tabs open, social media, Google Maps, streaming services, the camera, and photo editing. During testing, I did not encounter any noticeable delays, while ColorOS remained smooth and stable throughout.
Gaming is also not a problem for the Reno16 5G. Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG Mobile, and Mobile Legends run comfortably at high or the highest available graphics settings. Naturally, it does not match the performance of top-tier gaming smartphones, but there is more than enough power for most popular games without noticeable frame-rate drops.
Importantly, the smartphone does not become excessively hot under load. After an extended gaming session, the upper part of the body becomes noticeably warm, but the device remains comfortable to hold. Heat is distributed fairly evenly, and there is no significant performance drop caused by overheating.
The AI HyperBoost 3.0 system also plays a role here. It automatically balances the workload between the processor and GPU to maintain stable performance while avoiding unnecessary power consumption. Setting the marketing terminology aside, the result is straightforward: the Reno16 5G remains fast and predictable even in demanding scenarios.
In my view, switching to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 was a good decision. The OPPO Reno16 5G is not trying to be a gaming flagship, but it delivers more than enough performance for comfortable everyday use, photography, multimedia, and modern games.

ColorOS 16: A Fast System with Useful AI Features
The OPPO Reno16 5G runs ColorOS 16, the company’s proprietary Android-based interface. It retains its distinctive visual style while becoming cleaner and more streamlined. The menus look modern, animations are smooth, and the main settings are easy to find without having to dig through numerous submenus.
In everyday use, the system feels stable and responsive. Apps open without noticeable delays, switching between them is smooth, and the interface avoids being overloaded with unnecessary effects. ColorOS also offers plenty of customization options: you can change the visual theme, adjust the lock screen, gestures, notifications, and workspace to suit your personal habits.
AI features play a noticeable role in the overall experience. One of the most interesting is tied to the dedicated AI Snap Key on the side of the smartphone. It can be used to quickly save information from the screen, record a voice note, or open AI Mind Space. Importantly, the button’s function can be reassigned – for example, to launch the camera, flashlight, translator, or another action of your choice.
AI Mind Space works as a smart space for saved content. It can collect screenshots, documents, notes, photos, and other information you may want to return to later. The main idea is that you can search for what you need using natural language, without having to remember the exact file name or where it was saved. This is particularly convenient when dealing with large amounts of information throughout the day.
Another feature is AI Mind Pilot. It allows you to work with multiple AI services in a single environment and compare their responses. This can be useful for researching information, preparing texts, or quickly developing ideas. For now, it is more of an additional tool for people who already actively use AI, but the concept itself looks promising.
O+ Connect is another practical addition. It simplifies file transfers between the Reno16 5G and devices running Windows, macOS, iPhone, or iPad. For users who regularly work across multiple ecosystems, this is noticeably more convenient than constantly relying on messaging apps, cables, or cloud storage.
At the same time, ColorOS has one notable weakness: the relatively large number of pre-installed apps. After first setting up the smartphone, you may find more software than you would expect on a device in this class. Most unnecessary apps can be uninstalled, and after some cleanup, the system looks considerably tidier. However, some pre-installed software remains, which may disappoint users who prefer a cleaner, near-stock Android experience.

OPPO Reno16 5G Cameras
The OPPO Reno16 5G features a rather unusual camera setup for its class: all three rear modules have a 50MP resolution. This is significant because many smartphones pair their primary camera with simpler sensors that are less capable and therefore used less frequently.
Here, each module has a practical purpose: the main camera handles most everyday shots, the telephoto lens is intended for portraits and distant subjects, while the ultrawide camera is useful for landscapes, architecture, and fitting large groups into the frame.
The main camera is built around the Sony LYT-600 sensor and features optical image stabilization. It focuses quickly and performs well in most shooting scenarios. In daylight, photos are detailed, with natural textures, good contrast, and rich yet relatively realistic colors. HDR also works effectively, preserving detail in bright skies and darker areas of the frame without making images look excessively processed.
Even when viewing photos on a large display, it is clear that the processing does not apply overly aggressive noise reduction. Fine details – such as fabric textures, leaves, or architectural elements – remain visible after processing. This is particularly important for users who want to do more than simply post photos on social media and occasionally edit or archive their images at full resolution.
In the evening and in low-light environments, the Reno16 5G automatically activates night mode. It helps brighten the scene and recover more detail from the shadows. Noise does appear, of course, but that is perfectly normal for a smartphone in this class.
One of the strongest parts of the camera system is the telephoto lens based on the Samsung JN5 sensor. It also offers a 50MP resolution, optical image stabilization, and 3.5x optical zoom. This module significantly expands the phone’s photographic capabilities, allowing you to capture distant subjects without a noticeable loss in quality or take portraits with a more natural perspective.
The equivalent focal length of around 80mm is particularly well suited to portrait photography. Faces look more natural than when shooting close-ups with the main camera, while the background receives a soft and pleasing blur. Overall, the processing does a good job of separating the subject from the background, although minor errors can occur in challenging scenes involving hair or backlighting.
Up to around 7–10x magnification, photos remain detailed enough for viewing and sharing on social media. Beyond that, the limitations of digital zoom become increasingly noticeable, so for the best results, it is better to rely primarily on the optical zoom.
The ultrawide camera also feels like a capable part of the system rather than an afterthought. It works well for landscapes, interiors, and architecture, retaining plenty of detail without excessive distortion around the edges. Another advantage is that its colors and white balance are close to those of the main camera. As a result, switching between lenses does not make your photos look as though they were taken with completely different smartphones.
The 50MP front-facing camera also deserves attention. It captures sharp selfies with good exposure, while its wider field of view makes it easy to fit several people into the frame. For those who frequently record Stories, make video calls, or create content, the ability to record video in 4K is another useful advantage.
Video recording also leaves a positive impression overall. Stabilization helps when shooting on the move, while the automatic horizon leveling feature keeps the frame more level when walking. It cannot replace a dedicated gimbal, but its capabilities are more than sufficient for travel videos, vlogs, and social media content.
Among the software features, Pop Cam deserves special mention. It is a creative shooting mode with filters inspired by analog cameras. Rather than simply changing colors, it alters the overall character of the image, including light, contrast, and grain. It is not an essential feature for everyday photography, but it will appeal to users who want stylized shots without relying on additional apps.
ORIGINAL PHOTOS AND VIDEOS HERE
For most users, the more practical feature will be AI Eraser. It allows you to quickly remove an unwanted object or person in the background from a photo. The results depend on the complexity of the scene, but in simpler cases, the tool works quickly and can genuinely save an otherwise great shot.
Battery Life
Despite its compact body, the OPPO Reno16 5G packs a large 6,700mAh silicon-carbon battery. This is one of the smartphone’s strongest features: combined with the energy-efficient Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor and AMOLED display, it delivers impressive battery life.
With active use – including social media, the camera, navigation, video playback, and gaming – the Reno16 5G comfortably lasts through a full day. With more moderate usage, a single charge can even stretch to two full days. For a smartphone with a 6.32-inch display, that is a genuinely strong result.
The smartphone supports 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging. Importantly, unlike the previous model, the appropriate power adapter is included in the box. Fully charging the large battery takes a little over an hour, so even when the battery is nearly depleted, the Reno16 5G can be quickly prepared for another day of use.

Would I Recommend the OPPO Reno16 5G?
The OPPO Reno16 5G comes across as a thoughtfully designed smartphone that retains the defining traits of the Reno series: a compact form factor, distinctive design, and comfortable ergonomics. It is easy to use with one hand, while the quality materials and unusual rear-panel design give it a more premium feel.
The biggest upgrade is the camera system. A full-fledged telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and optical image stabilization is a major advantage for such a compact smartphone. It makes the Reno16 5G appealing not only for everyday photography but also for portraits, distant subjects, and travel photography.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 platform delivers enough performance for everyday tasks, camera use, multimedia, and popular games. At the same time, it does not cause excessive heat during use. The large 6,700mAh battery adds further confidence: the smartphone easily lasts through a full day of active use and often longer. 80W fast charging and the included power adapter make it even more practical.
Other strengths include the bright 120Hz AMOLED display, IP69K water and dust protection, good stereo speakers, and stable ColorOS 16 with a useful set of AI features.
There are a few drawbacks as well. The more capable camera system has made the smartphone slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor. The 120Hz refresh rate is more than sufficient for comfortable everyday use, although the higher-end Reno16 Pro offers 144Hz. Some users may also miss the lack of a microSD card slot.
The OPPO Reno16 5G is a solid choice for those who do not want to carry a large smartphone but still expect a capable camera, long battery life, and a modern design. It is a well-balanced model without any major compromises, and it should particularly appeal to fans of compact Android smartphones.
Where to buy OPPO Reno16 5G
