Sony has officially announced its decision to spin off its home entertainment division and create a new joint venture company with TCL Electronics. As part of the deal, TCL will take a 51% controlling stake, while Sony will retain a 49% stake. The new entity will manage Sony’s global TV and home audio operations.

The parties confirmed the agreement by signing a memorandum of understanding. The final terms of the agreement are expected to be finalized by the end of March 2026. The joint venture is expected to start operations in April 2027, subject to all necessary regulatory approvals.
The new company will cover the full production and commercial cycle. It will be responsible for product development, manufacturing, global sales and after-sales customer service. At the same time, TVs and audio devices will continue to be produced under the Sony and Bravia brands, which remain key elements of market positioning.
Sony will provide the partnership with its own image processing technologies, audio expertise and brand strength with a long-standing reputation in the premium segment. TCL, for its part, will provide access to large-scale production facilities, efficient supply chains and optimized operational processes. TCL’s strong growth in display technology and increasing global market share create an opportunity for the company to combine its manufacturing strengths with Sony’s distribution network and image.
For Sony, this move fits into its long-term business transformation strategy. The company is gradually shifting its focus from hardware production to content and digital ecosystems, including anime, film production, music, and gaming. Earlier, the corporation had already exited the personal computer and tablet market and stopped producing Blu-ray players.

In fact, the new agreement ends the era of fully independent management of Sony’s television business, which began in the 1960s. For TCL, the partnership opens up an opportunity to gain a foothold in premium global markets by leveraging the heritage of the Bravia brand. Sony will retain its presence in the home entertainment segment, but will no longer have day-to-day operational responsibility for hardware production.
