Tesla enthusiasts and fans of electrification have been asking the company for quite some time to enter the electric bike market. And, for a brief three seconds, it seemed as though the automaker had heeded their requests, since Tesla did indeed unveil its first bike. There’s just one “but” – it has neither an electric motor nor pedals, and it’s designed for children.

The Balance Bike for Kids page has already appeared in Tesla’s online store. It will cost $225 and is designed for children ages 2 to 5. It seems this isn’t quite what the brand’s fans were expecting.

Every few years, new surveys or fan-made concepts have fueled interest in the idea of a Tesla two-wheeled vehicle. Buyers have repeatedly mentioned this company among those from whom they’d most like to see an electric bike. What’s more, rumors about an electric bike called the Tesla Model B have been circulating for almost as long as the company has been manufacturing cars.

Elon Musk has repeatedly dampened enthusiasm for this idea, although on occasion he has expressed support. But in the end, the first bike that Tesla fans officially saw is essentially a large toy for children who are just learning to ride. The Balance Bike features a lightweight magnesium frame, an adjustable seat with five height settings, a Tesla logo on the side, and a “T” emblem on the front. There is no drivetrain – the child moves by pushing off the ground with their feet, which is the main feature of a balance bike.

Tesla notes that the user’s minimum leg length must be 13.7″, and the maximum weight limit is 35 kg (77 lbs). All the tools needed to assemble the bike are included in the package. The $225 price tag reflects the model’s premium positioning, as most brands offer high-quality balance bikes priced between $50 and $120. Thus, the company has priced its children’s bike – featuring its brand logo – on par with the most expensive models on the market – and perhaps higher than what most parents would be willing to spend on such a vehicle.

While the brand has yet to release a true electric bike, many other automakers, including BMW, have already entered this market. Among electric vehicle manufacturers, Rivian is also worth noting; it has created a separate company, Also, to develop electric bikes, which already offers a range of interesting designs and features.
