Summer is in full swing, which means you want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. To make your mood even better, you can decorate – set out night lanterns or hang outdoor string lights. The latter are quite fashionable now – it seems all my neighbors already have them. But theirs are boring, with a single color. Mine, however, supports all RGB shades and is controlled via an app! Let’s see what makes Nanoleaf Outdoor String Lights so good.

Design
Surprisingly, the initial impression of this new product is made immediately upon unboxing, even before it’s turned on. The Nanoleaf Outdoor String Lights stand out with an interesting design: the bulbs aren’t round, but rather appear to be cut from crystal. One set is designed for 15 meters, but up to three such sets can be connected together. I connected two 15-meter sets, and that was more than enough for me.

Setting up
Hanging the Nanoleaf Outdoor String Lights isn’t an easy task, but it’s no more complicated than with any other string lights. I ran them from my garage to the house, hooking them onto trees along the way. I plugged them in, pressed the power button (I had to reset them first by holding the button down for a few seconds), and the lights came on.

For some, that might be enough, but we’re not paying all this money just to leave everything as is. Next, let’s download the Nanoleaf app (if you don’t have it) and find our string lights.

In action
The app is neat, with a whole host of settings that would suffice for anyone. There are built-in effects, the option to choose specific colors, and even… artificial intelligence. I admit, I was taken aback when I saw it, though this AI doesn’t have much intelligence – it simply allows you to quickly find the right color combination using words.
And it really works: for example, on Canada Day, I wanted to light up a garland in red and white. I typed the word “Canada” into the app, and… voila! It basically understood me. But most often, it’s better to just type the colors and the effect you want. You get what you want about 70% of the time.

The bulbs are quite bright, though I wouldn’t use them as the sole source of light. They’re more for a “wow” effect and creating unique vibes. It’s hard for me to say how they’ll perform for Christmas or New Year’s – I’m almost certain they won’t survive the -40 degree winter here, so I’ll put them away just in case.

Verdict
Nanoleaf’s mission to imbue everything and anything with RGB continues successfully: the Nanoleaf Outdoor String Lights can easily be called the most advanced string lights on the market. My main question is how durable they are, but only time will tell. I can only say that they have survived heavy rain and hail. I hope they will survive more than just one season.
