Nanoleaf isn’t particularly known for its outdoor products, but lately, the company has made a significant effort to change that. Among the interesting new releases are the Solar Garden Lights. As you might guess, these are those very same solar-powered outdoor lights you’ve probably seen before… just much fancier. But are they worth it?

Solar Garden Lights

Design

Since we’re looking at a device that is fairly simple in its essence, I won’t go into too much detail. The Nanoleaf Solar Garden Light is a rather large outdoor lamp (compared to your neighbors’ standard garden lights) that looks like a futuristic flower.

It has several “buds” and the height can be adjusted. The design immediately stands out – it’s elegantly understated and looks appropriate in a variety of settings.

It comes with a solar panel with a battery, as well as a remote control.

Setting

Without further ado, let’s take our Nanoleaf Solar Garden Lights out of the box and put them in the ground. But first, we need to connect them to the battery. You can charge it from an outlet beforehand, but I don’t really see the point.

Once we find a suitable spot, we place the “flower” in the ground, followed by the solar panel, which immediately starts blinking, indicating that it has begun charging. One day of sunlight is enough to last through the night.

That’s all for now. I recommend choosing a spot with plenty of sun – unfortunately, the cord isn’t very long, so you won’t be able to place the Nanoleaf Solar Garden Lights too far into the shade.

In action

When darkness falls, Nanoleaf Solar Garden Lights come to life. As expected from a device by this company, it offers a multitude of settings, although technically it cannot be considered “smart” as there’s no internet or Bluetooth connection. Yet, it turned out to be smarter than I anticipated.

Having placed six of these devices on my property, I waited for nightfall. I had to wait until 11 PM, but then my electronic flowers began to awaken. Armed with the remote (one remote works for all), I started trying out various modes and colors. There are many, though precisely adjusting the desired shade is extremely difficult without an app. Nanoleaf Solar Garden Lights have several animation modes and color combinations, and most interestingly, they somehow all connect into a single network. This means that if I change the mode on one, all the others automatically adjust – even those far beyond the house.

Solar Garden Lights

I really like the look of the Nanoleaf Solar Garden Lights. They’re certainly a novelty, but there’s something cool about their appearance. It’s not a kitschy Christmas decoration, but something a bit more appealing. And the charge lasts even for those that spend most of the day in the shade.

There’s just one “but”: one light in my set refused to charge from the sun. I tried several times in different places, but it seems to only be able to charge from an outlet. Which, of course, isn’t an option. So, check immediately: if the charge indicator isn’t blinking during the day, that already tells you something is wrong.
