Facebook: Digital Dictatorship Disguised as Security

Facebook stopped being just a social platform a long time ago – for millions of users, it has become a tool for business, work, staying in touch with family, and even their only source of information. That is precisely why Meta’s arbitrary blocking policies provoke such outrage.

Yesterday, I experienced Facebook’s arbitrary enforcement firsthand.

Late in the evening, I opened my page and, instead of the usual feed, saw a message saying that I needed to verify my account. The explanation was simple and unequivocal: “You are violating our Community Standards.” What followed was something I could hardly make sense of. First, I entered my phone number and the code sent via SMS. Then I took a selfie, turning my head in different directions. Eventually, Facebook went even further and asked me to upload a photo of my passport. I did everything they asked and thought that would be the end of it. But of course not…In the morning, I received a message: “Your account has been disabled.”

In simple terms, Facebook erased sixteen years of my history on the social network with a single decision.

And the worst part isn’t even that. I can’t properly appeal the decision, I can’t contact anyone who could explain why it happened, and I effectively have no way to prove that this is my account and that I haven’t violated any rules. Sixteen years of history – photos, posts, contacts, memories… All of it could disappear in an instant because of a soulless algorithm that doesn’t even consider it necessary to explain what exactly you did wrong.

Blocking Without Explanation

The typical scenario is familiar to thousands of users: an account that someone has been using for years is suddenly blocked. No warning, no clear explanation – just a dry notification about a “Community Standards violation.” What exactly was violated, when, and how, for the most part remains a mystery.

The appeals process often turns into a conversation with a chatbot that is incapable of providing a meaningful response, while reaching “live” support can take weeks or even months – if it produces any result at all.

The Passport Requirement: A Line That Should Never Be Crossed

Particularly troubling is the practice of requiring users to upload a passport scan or take a selfie with a code written on a piece of paper in order to regain access to an account or “verify its authenticity.” The platform may ask users to upload a passport – preferably an international passport – or take a selfie holding a specific code written on a piece of paper. Essentially, a private corporation registered in another country is collecting some of the most sensitive personal data from users around the world – without a court order, transparent rules, or independent oversight.

Critics are right to ask: why should a commercial company have access to passport scans belonging to millions of people around the world? Where and for how long is this data stored? Who has access to it? Meta provides virtually no clear answers to these questions, while its privacy policy is written in language that an average user is unlikely to be able to fully understand.

Algorithmic Censorship Without a Human or a Rationale

The system most often requires identity verification when an account’s activity appears suspicious to the algorithm – an IP address change, a login from a new device, unusually high activity, or user reports. But algorithms make mistakes on a massive scale: an active journalist, volunteer, or community administrator with a large audience can look just as “suspicious” to the system as a bot or spammer. As a result, it is not necessarily the rule-breakers who get blocked, but some of the platform’s most active and valuable users.

A telling example: administrators of a well-known community lost their page after someone on the team posted unblurred passport documents while trying to locate the owner of the lost IDs. A noble intention ended up costing people their work and an audience they had spent months building.

Double Standards and Opaque Rules

Facebook’s rules are deliberately vague, giving the company virtually unlimited freedom in how they are interpreted. The exact same behavior can result in one account being blocked while going completely unnoticed on another. There is no public register of enforcement decisions, no independent arbitration, and no meaningful accountability for erroneous or biased decisions made by the company.

For businesses that have spent years building their presence, reputation, and audience on the platform, a sudden ban is not an inconvenience – it is a financial catastrophe. People can lose access to customers, message archives, photos, and their entire digital lives because of a decision made by an algorithm that isn’t even required to explain its reasoning.

What Can Be Done About It

Public pressure and complaints to regulators (in the EU, for example, the Digital Services Act requires large platforms to explain moderation decisions and provide an appeal mechanism)
Backing up data and diversifying communication channels so you don’t become dependent on a single platform
Seeking legal support through specialized organizations that document cases of arbitrary account bans

It is worth noting that Meta’s position is that identity verification is a tool for combating bots, fraud, and fake accounts – not censorship. The company maintains that the vast majority of account bans involve genuine violations of its rules. This article presents a critical perspective that is common among affected users and human rights organizations, but the arguments on the other side should also be taken into account when forming your own assessment of the situation.
