The Ukrainian point-and-click adventure game BROKEN LIFE has been released in early access on Steam, set in a war-torn world. According to the game’s developer, Kostyantyn Reus, the harsh reality of the war in Ukraine served as the inspiration behind the creation of this atmospheric game.
The story centers around Leo, a former soldier who returns to his city after the war. Exhausted by the years of conflict, he must rebuild his life, cope with grief, and uncover what happened to his family during the occupation. However, what initially seems like a straightforward task for Leo soon reveals itself to be an illusion, as his home conceals many dark secrets.
“As a solo indie developer from Ukraine, I relied on my own life experience during the war to create this story,” says Kostyantyn Reus. “So, join Leo on his journey through dark and atmospheric 2D environments, solving puzzles cleverly woven into a story filled with tension and emotion.”
The developer noted that the game features a non-linear gameplay structure, meaning the direction of the story is influenced by the player’s choices. There are no purely positive or negative actions in the narrative, allowing players to decide how to lead the protagonist to his final goal. Along the way, Leo will encounter numerous obstacles and challenges, which can be overcome with logic and creativity. The puzzles in the game primarily serve the storyline rather than the gameplay itself, and they vary in difficulty.

The core of the game lies in its visual design. The developer meticulously crafted the environment so that every detail evokes a wide range of emotions and contributes to a grim atmosphere. Leo witnesses the extensive destruction his hometown endured under prolonged occupation. The visual style is based both on the developer’s personal vision and real-world observations, as well as numerous photographs and videos of ruined and devastated cities.
In addition, BROKEN LIFE features full voice acting – the developer uses AI technologies to voice all dialogues and cutscenes for each of the 17 supported languages by the time of release. This makes the game more accessible to users with poor eyesight or those who cannot read texts for extended periods. The AI voice acting feature is optional and can be turned off in the settings.
The game will be released on PC later this year. Currently, it is available on Steam with a 20% discount, priced at \$2.40. The discount will be valid until May 10.
