Sony banned users from Russia and Belarus from activating their video games on Steam

-

The other day, a message appeared on the Internet that Sony limited the activation of its video games in the Steam market in Russia and Belarus. “WARNING! The publisher limited the activation of this game to the territory of the Russian Federation and Belarus. That is, the game is not activated on Russian and Belarusian Steam accounts. On the territory of other CIS countries, the game is successfully activated”, – this was the message received by the Russian distributor and publisher “Buka”, which was reported in the publication about the pre-order of the Horizon Forbidden West game. The Steampay online store also reported that the activation of this and other Sony games has become unavailable for Russian and Belarusian Steam accounts.

The reasons for this restriction have not been announced, and users can only wait for further comments from Sony or contact official sources for answers.

Let me remind you that shortly after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Sony company stopped supplying PlayStation game consoles and software to the Russian market. It was also reported that Sony Music is completely withdrawing from Russia six months after ceasing operations in the country.

In other news, Sony refused to merge with the Indian media group Zee Entertainment due to Russian assets. This was reported by Reuters concerning correspondence between Sony executives and Zee top managers. The companies differed on more than 20 compliance issues. Among them is the “inability of the Indian company” to dispose of some Russian assets. For Sony, it turned out to be “critically important” not to cooperate with a sanctioned state. The broken deal is estimated at $10 billion.

Negotiations lasted two years. The deal was supposed to create an Indian television giant that could compete with the likes of Walt Disney and Reliance. Analysts say that the derailment of the deal has already hit Zee’s market position. The company was already experiencing difficulties, and now its shares immediately collapsed by 27%.
