Micron demonstrated the world’s first 512 GB DDR5 RDIMM module, which can operate at speeds of up to 9,200 MT/s and reduce power consumption by more than 60% compared to a configuration of four 128 GB modules. The development is aimed at enterprise and cloud data centers that need to process large volumes of data in AI, analytics systems, in-memory databases, and during resource-intensive modeling. AMD and Intel have already joined the testing of this new solution. Both companies are validating it on their upcoming server platforms.

The high capacity of the new RDIMM was achieved thanks to Micron’s technologies for vertically stacking components during memory packaging. The design utilizes vertically stacked DRAM chips connected to each other via through-silicon vias (TSVs). This approach increases memory density within individual DRAM packages while maintaining the performance required by modern server systems. The use of 512 GB modules allows for the installation of up to 12 TB of DDR5 DRAM in a single 2-socket server with 24 slots.

“Micron continues to set the pace for memory technology, creating a new class of ultra-high-density and high-performance server solutions. These solutions help customers store larger datasets closer to the computing resources that need them,” said Raj Narasimhan, senior vice president and general manager of Micron’s Cloud Memory Business Unit. According to him, the 512 GB RDIMM enables the creation of servers with several terabytes of RAM that support larger-scale AI and databases, increase virtualization density, and enable more efficient energy use without increasing the physical footprint of the server infrastructure.

Micron is also working with key players in the server ecosystem to verify the compatibility of 512 GB DDR5 RDIMMs with next-generation platforms and ensure their continued adoption. The rapid proliferation of large language models (LLMs), agent-based AI, real-time query processing, and multi-core processors is driving the need for servers with greater memory capacity, higher bandwidth, and improved energy efficiency.

Micron’s 512 GB RDIMMs are designed for these use cases. Thanks to the increased RAM capacity, larger datasets can be kept in main memory at all times, reducing the need to access slower storage tiers. This also helps minimize data movement, which consumes significant resources. Micron cites energy efficiency as a key advantage of the new 512 GB module. Its operating power consumption is more than 60% lower than that of a configuration with four 128 GB DDR5 modules.

For workloads constrained by bandwidth or memory capacity, particularly data analytics based on Spark Support Vector Machines (SVM), the 512 GB RDIMM can deliver up to 1.4 times higher performance compared to 256 GB DDR5 configurations. The new module also offers advantages for databases and caching platforms that require significant memory capacity. Among the systems mentioned by Micron are RocksDB and Redis. According to the company, using 512 GB RDIMMs in such scenarios allows for increased throughput, a higher number of concurrent operations, and more efficient scaling of datasets.

Micron expects mass production of the 512 GB RDIMM to begin in the second half of 2027, in line with customer demand.
