OpenAI stated that it has been working with its competitors, Anthropic and Google, for several weeks on issues related to AI safety and risk management. What began as a public warning from an Anthropic researcher has now evolved into what may be the largest joint initiative among the three leading AI labs.

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI’s head of global policy, Chris Lehane, said the companies are exploring various ways to collaborate and work together on AI safety. At the same time, he added that OpenAI does not believe this work requires an exemption from U.S. antitrust laws.

It all began after Jacob Coxon, a former OpenAI employee and researcher at Anthropic, resigned from the company and accused both firms of competing to create self-improving superintelligence without acting responsibly. He stated that people working at these companies also sincerely believe that AI “could kill us all by the end of the decade,” and added that the labs are “gambling with our lives.”

What’s even worse is that this warning wasn’t dismissed even by his former colleagues. Evan Hubinger, head of Alignment Science at Anthropic, publicly backed Coxon, stating that he personally estimates the probability that AI will kill all humans within the next decade to be more than 10%.

Anthropic

This incident sparked a much broader discussion about whether the development of advanced AI systems really needs to be slowed down. A few days later, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” and called on companies to slow the pace of improvement in their most powerful systems.

Amodei’s proposal calls for granting independent third-party safety evaluators permanent access to cutting-edge AI companies, as well as agreeing on common safety standards among labs and continuing to work toward international coordination. Anthropic also stated that it would begin implementing the proposal regarding independent evaluators on its own.

Sam Altman also voiced his support for this idea on his Twitter page, as did Elon Musk.

AI

None of these companies has yet officially announced whether they will actually halt or limit the development of advanced AI models, so it remains to be seen what specific outcomes the negotiations among leading labs will yield.
