Anthropic, known for its Claude Code tool, is expanding access to its AI agents. Since the fall of 2024, the company has been training artificial intelligence models to work with computers like humans, and Claude Code has become one of the most practical results of this work, allowing developers to automate routine tasks. Now these features are available to a wider audience with the preview version of Claude Cowork.

Anthropic describes Cowork as an easier way for everyone to work with Claude, not just developers. After granting access to a single folder on a computer, the system can read, edit, or create files on behalf of the user.

The company provides several scenarios for using Cowork. For example, Claude can organize a download folder by renaming files for easier navigation, or convert screenshots of receipts and invoices into spreadsheets for expense accounting. Cowork can also navigate websites with the Claude Chrome plugin and work with third-party services such as Canva through the Connectors framework.

Anthropic emphasizes that Cowork simplifies the work with Claude by removing the need to manually provide context or adapt the results to the desired format. Users can queue multiple tasks, and Claude will process them in parallel.

At the same time, the company warns that the agent can perform potentially undesirable actions, such as deleting files or misinterpreting instructions. According to Anthropic, Claude does not have access to data without explicit permission, but users are advised to formulate tasks as clearly as possible.

Anthropic is not the only company developing computer agents – Microsoft has been promoting Copilot for several years. However, the success of Claude Code among developers may help Anthropic convince a wider audience of the practical benefits of such tools.

Currently, Claude Cowork is available for preliminary access to Claude Max subscription users. It also requires a Mac with the Claude app for macOS installed, while everyone else can join a waiting list.
