HarmonyOS, an operating system developed by Huawei that operates completely independently of the Android ecosystem, is experiencing rapid growth. The recently released HarmonyOS 6 has seen a significant surge in adoption, reaching 70 million downloads. The latest generation of Huawei’s software suite is showing a significant acceleration in adoption rates. Just a few weeks after the conclusion of the HDC 2026 developer conference, independent analytics platforms confirmed that the operating system had reached another major milestone.

According to monitoring conducted by Wonder Toolbox, HarmonyOS version 6 is currently integrated and functioning successfully on over 70 million devices; to be more precise, this figure stands at approximately 70.1 million units. These statistics demonstrate tremendous growth compared to the figures cited by Yu Chengdong, Executive Director and Head of Huawei’s Terminal BG, during the aforementioned event on June 12, when the figure was 66 million.
During that same official event, Yu Chengdong also informed attendees that the open-source HarmonyOS ecosystem has, to date, managed to integrate over 1.3 billion devices. This includes not only traditional mobile phones and tablets, but also personal computers, portable electronics, smart home devices, automotive vehicles, and a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, clearly demonstrating Huawei’s commitment to integrating its own system into a diverse array of product lines.
Such adoption rates are of fundamental importance to Huawei. Faced with strict sanctions from the United States, which completely blocked access to Google’s service infrastructure, the company focused its efforts on developing a self-contained software ecosystem. The evolutionary path of HarmonyOS has been exceptionally eventful, particularly with the release of new versions such as HarmonyOS Next, where developers have finally abandoned any compatibility with the Android architecture in favor of a unique, in-house-developed foundation. In addition, at HDC 2026, developers unveiled the HarmonyOS 7 concept for the first time, with a key focus on the integration of AI, intelligent agent systems, and spatial modeling technologies.
The published statistics look quite impressive. In early 2026, the total number of installations of HarmonyOS versions 5 and 6 barely reached a few tens of millions, but the ambitious goal is to surpass the 100 million mark in connected devices before the end of this year. Industry experts attribute this success to high user satisfaction, the active expansion of the pool of software developers, and the systematic expansion of the app catalog. In China, based on several key evaluation criteria, this platform has already secured the second-place ranking among smartphone operating systems.
A key driver of this success is considered to be the seamless synchronization and optimization of the hardware with the software environment, which Huawei has implemented. Although the primary source of growth is still concentrated within the domestic Chinese market, Huawei representatives are making subtle hints about the future rollout of the system abroad and providing software support on the international stage. Overall, the latest data on 70 million HarmonyOS 6 downloads serves as irrefutable proof that Huawei’s sustained and persistent efforts in the software sector are yielding tangible positive results.
