The shortage of memory components is expected to remain a problem for several more years, but Sony expects the market to stabilize by the time the PlayStation 6 is launched. According to new leaks, the next-generation console may feature 30 GB of GDDR7 memory with 640 GB/s of bandwidth, which is about 42% higher than the PlayStation 5.

Almost 5 years have passed since the debut of the PlayStation 5, so it’s only natural that the information surrounding its successor is gradually intensifying. As rumors increase, more details about the potential technical characteristics of the upcoming system are emerging.

The new information came from a Kepler L2 insider who has previously demonstrated high accuracy of predictions. In his post on NeoGAF, he claims that the PlayStation 6 can get 30 GB of GDDR7 RAM. This is 6 GB more than previous leaks suggested and almost double the 16 GB of GDDR6 installed in the PlayStation 5.

It is expected to use 10 3GB memory modules in a clamshell configuration. Although the memory bus width may be reduced from 256 bits to 160 bits, the increase in speed to 32 Gbps per chip will raise the total bandwidth to 640 GB/s. For comparison, the PS5 Pro provides approximately 576 GB/s.

Despite the fact that the source has a good reputation, all information is still at the level of rumors. Even if Sony plans to use 30 GB of memory, global component supply difficulties could affect the final specifications. According to some reports, it was problems with memory availability that forced Valve to postpone the launch of Steam Machine and Steam Frame.

Another forum participant suggested that a more realistic option might be a configuration with 20 GB of memory, as the increase in capacity could raise the recommended price by about $100. Kepler L2 disagreed with this scenario, saying that 20 GB would not be enough for the next generation of games. He acknowledged that the additional cost in production (BOM) could be around $100, but Sony would probably have to accept these costs in the hope of further reducing component prices.

There is also speculation that Sony may release a portable version of the PlayStation 6 along with the main model. According to the same insider, it can get 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory.

In addition, it is reported that the Japanese company is working on two different processors for the stationary console and the portable version. Other leaks point to the use of a processor based on AMD Zen 6 architecture, possibly with 3D cache technology, as well as a new UDNA graphics architecture.

As for the launch date, the PlayStation 6 could debut around 2027. According to preliminary data from AMD, the next generation Xbox may also be released in this period.
