The fantasy blockbuster Masters of the Universe aims to replicate the phenomenal success of Barbie and take a similar position among high-profile movie projects based on popular toys. The film, which is scheduled to premiere on June 5, relies on an approach that has already proven effective in 2023. Although both films share a common basis in the form of well-known toy brands, the authors of the new project are trying to borrow not only the concept but also the atmosphere created by Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. It was the ironic tone and meta-narrative that became the key features of Barbie that inspired the team working on the story of G-Man.
In an article for Entertainment Weekly, producer Jason Blumenthal spoke about his collaboration with Courtney Valenti, head of Amazon MGM Studios. He emphasized that her role as executive producer of Barbie was crucial in the creation of Masters of the Universe. He conveyed her position as follows: she is confident that she can repeat the success, because she has already been able to achieve it before, having accurately sensed the market, properly used nostalgia and effectively built the story.

Another important figure in the project was Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Studios, who also worked on the Barbie story. She recalled how at first the audience could not understand the target audience of the movie about a doll, but in the end it won over everyone without exception. She drew attention to the fact that before the release of Barbie, the audience did not fully understand who exactly this movie was made for. According to her, there were doubts whether the film was aimed only at girls or at a certain age group, but in the end it became obvious that it was intended for the widest possible audience, and Greta Gerwig emphasized this from the very beginning.
According to Brenner, the situation is similar with Masters of the Universe. She notes that viewers still do not have a clear idea of what this movie is. Some people perceive it as something strange and eccentric, trying to compare it to other projects, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, but at the same time, this uncertainty makes it unique. She emphasizes that against the backdrop of a large number of similar stories in the sword-and-sandals genre, the new film stands out for its own style, original visual approach, and specific humor.

Brenner also emphasizes that the film is not trying to be overly serious. She draws attention to the fact that the modern world is oversaturated with tense topics, so lightness and humor become an important advantage. According to her, the film combines entertainment with respect for the viewer, without descending into primitive humor, and this combination makes it bold and attractive.
Whether Masters of the Universe will be able to repeat the large-scale breakthrough of Barbie will become clear after the premiere on June 5, when it will become obvious whether this project is able to recreate the same effect that has already struck the industry once.
