Elon Musk is convinced he knows a way to save Earth for the next 1 billion years. In his view, intelligent AI satellites deployed from the Moon’s surface are capable of maintaining habitable conditions on our planet virtually indefinitely.
In a post on X, the businessman noted that simply switching from fossil fuels to solar and wind energy will not be enough to protect humanity from large-scale catastrophes, which lead to mass extinctions and occur approximately every 100 million years. The solution he proposes involves the use of AI-controlled, solar-powered intelligent satellites. These devices would be positioned at a stable point between Earth and the Sun after being launched from the Moon’s surface using a giant electromagnetic catapult instead of conventional rockets.

An integrated AI will perform continuous fine-tuning of the system in real time, without waiting for commands from humans. Musk views the use of a mass accelerator as a way to transport raw materials cheaply via an electromagnetic launch track built on the Moon, since the lack of an atmosphere and low gravity make launching cargo into space much easier than from Earth.
The businessman also shared calculations generated by the Grok system, according to which approximately 5% of Florida’s territory, (approximately 6,800 km²) could face regular flooding as early as 2070 if a scenario of rapidly rising global sea levels were to occur. Musk emphasized that humanity has approximately 50 years left to make decisions before living conditions in coastal areas undergo drastic changes.

This is not the first time the entrepreneur has floated this idea. Earlier, in November, he promoted a similar concept involving the creation of an orbital constellation of AI-powered solar satellites. These satellites would make slight adjustments to the amount of sunlight reaching the planet, thereby precisely regulating Earth’s temperature. In addition, Musk links planetary threats to SpaceX’s overall strategy, in which his financial compensation is directly tied to the success of establishing an autonomous colony on Mars. He refers to this base as a kind of insurance policy against potential extinction, as he stated this past weekend, and anticipates landing the first humans on the Martian surface in just 5–7 years.
