If Apple wanted to create a stylus for a smartphone, the upcoming foldable iPhone would be the ideal device for it. It seems Apple understands this well, and, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the company has even “internally prototyped, tested and considered launching” a modified Apple Pencil for its upcoming foldable smartphone. At the same time, the journalist added that the tech giant will most likely not release this prototype accessory alongside its first iPhone with a foldable display.

According to Gurman, the stylus prototype was “stubbier” than existing Apple Pencil models, which are typically used with the iPad. Like existing Apple styluses, this prototype was designed to attach to the side of the foldable iPhone for storage and charging. However, retaining this attachment method poses a serious problem, as it would get in the way when you unfold the smartphone but don’t want to pick up the stylus at that moment.
In addition, Gurman noted that the stylus could leave marks on the display, as foldable devices generally have more delicate screens. Even Samsung has certain S Pen models that work exclusively with its foldable smartphones. Furthermore, Steve Jobs’ famous line, “No one wants a stylus,” uttered during the presentation of the first iPhone in 2007, may be the reason Apple abandons the idea of a stylus altogether.
The foldable iPhone could debut as early as September 9, and then it will become clear whether the stylus will make it past the prototype stage. With far greater certainty, Mark Gurman reports that Apple is testing white and dark gray ceramic cases for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12. As for the software, Gurman reported that Apple is testing a new smartwatch feature that will cause the heart rate sensor to collect data throughout the day, rather than just during physical activity or at random moments.

In addition to this new feature, the tech giant is reportedly updating its fitness and health app to make it more like solutions from Whoop and Oura. For those planning to upgrade their device, Gurman also noted that the Apple Watch is likely to receive a major redesign next year, though it could be postponed until 2028.
