Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Mortal Kombat II after several months of silence. Earlier, the company postponed the film’s premiere from October 2025 to May 2026. The new video shows even more fights, an expanded plot, and new spectacular fatalities that should look especially spectacular on the big screen.

The main feature of the sequel will be a full-fledged Mortal Kombat tournament, which this time will actually take place and involve more characters from the game series. The central figure of the story is Johnny Cage played by Karl Urban. His character is a former movie star who has lost his popularity and is recruited by Raiden and Sonia Blade to participate in a deadly tournament.

The positive side will feature familiar characters as well as new faces, including Cole, Kitana, and Jax, who will be opposed by the forces of evil led by Shao Kahn, as well as Baraka, Cindel, and Kuan Chi. Scorpio and Sab Ziro will once again join the events, and their long-standing feud will continue. At the same time, Sab Ziro will appear in his ghostly form of Nub Saibot.

During the film’s panel at New York Comic-Con last year, director Simon McQuoid explained that Mortal Kombat II is being created as a feature-length embodiment of the atmosphere of the opening scene of the Scorpion and Sub-Zero confrontation from the 2021 reboot. The franchise’s creative director Ed Boon noted that the beginning of the sequel is based on a similar principle and is characterized by much greater intensity. According to him, the emotional tension of the scene is so strong that it will be difficult for viewers to hold back tears.

At the same panel, McQuaid and screenwriter Jeremy Slater spoke about their desire to make the movie bigger. The sequel will have more characters, a wider expanse of the universe’s mythology, and a significantly increased number of fight scenes. According to Boone, there will be about twice as many of them compared to the 2021 film. When the events go beyond the tournament, the characters will go on separate missions and experience their own adventures that will influence their development throughout the story.

Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to release on May 8, 2026. At the same time, work is already underway on the third part of the franchise.
