Lucasfilm has officially announced that, in honor of its 50th anniversary, the original 1977 film *Star Wars* will be shown on IMAX 70mm screens for the first time on February 19, 2027. Later that same year, the company will release the latest installment in the franchise, titled “Star Wars: Starfighter,” which is set to premiere on May 28, 2027 – exactly five decades after the first film hit theaters.
If you’re wondering which version of the film will be shown in theaters – the original or a digital remaster – Lucasfilm has assured viewers that theaters will screen the former. The IMAX 70mm film will be produced based on a recent restoration of the original film, although it remains unknown exactly how the restoration work was carried out, and we can only hope for minimal use of digital tools.
For the saga’s many devoted fans, this news is a real treat, as the opportunity to enjoy the original film in its pristine form – without additional scenes or modern digital effects – has become an extremely rare occurrence. Prior to this, the original version had been officially screened only twice since 1997, and both times that happened last year as part of a British film festival. In addition, the screening on massive 18-by-24-meter screens, accompanied by John Williams’ legendary score in 12-channel surround sound, promises an unforgettable experience.
As for the film *Star Wars: Starfighter*, it was shot on IMAX-certified Sony CineAlta Venice 2 digital cameras, which were even used by Tom Cruise during production. The film was created with a source resolution of 8.6K and a master format of 4K. This means the footage must be further upscaled and digitally converted to the IMAX 70mm format, which can exceed 14K in resolution.
