Saildrone, together with Lockheed Martin, has officially unveiled its newest and most impressive project, the Spectre autonomous vessel, which opens a new era in maritime defense strategy.

This 52-meter-long, 250-ton unmanned surface vessel was designed specifically to meet the growing needs of navies for high autonomy and strike power.

Thanks to a significant investment of $50 million from Lockheed Martin, Spectre has been uniquely integrated with the most advanced weapons and detection systems, making it a key element of the future “hybrid fleet”. The developers presented two modifications: Silent Endurance, which uses a proprietary rigid wing-sail for long, silent missions, and Stealth Strike with a low-profile hull for high-speed operations. The hybrid propulsion system with Caterpillar engines with a capacity of 5000 hp provides the ship with the ability to reach speeds of up to 30 knots and cover a distance of more than 3200 nautical miles (5926.4 km).

A special feature of the Spectre is its hidden deck, which can carry more than 70 tons of payload, including containerized Mk70 launchers for SM-6 and Tomahawk missiles. In addition to its offensive capabilities, the vessel serves as a high-end submarine hunter, utilizing advanced CAPTAS-4 sonar stations and towed TB-29 antennas.

The construction of these autonomous giants has been entrusted to the Fincantieri Marine Group shipyards, where it is planned to produce up to five units per year at an estimated price of $40 million each. The first full-scale ocean trials are expected to begin in early 2027. This development not only strengthens the technical superiority, but also offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional destroyers, allowing them to perform dangerous missions without risk to the crew.
