Samsung is actively accelerating the development of a mobile device with a “rollable” screen, aiming to release a device capable of seamlessly transforming from a small phone into a full-fledged tablet when needed. According to recently published data from the South Korean publication Maeil Business, Samsung Display is making every effort to develop this technology. Their goal is to launch the first mass-produced smartphone with a rollable mechanism in the first half of 2028, likely alongside the Galaxy S28 lineup or as part of it.

The new device is expected to be named the Galaxy Slide. Rumors also suggest it will feature a large 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 440 ppi. In addition, there are reports of a possible follow-up model launching in 2030.

This strategy makes perfect sense for Samsung. Despite its current dominance in the flexible device segment, the company’s market share in foldable displays has declined significantly: from approximately 41.8% in the final quarter of 2025 to 27% in the first quarter of 2026, according to reports by Omdia analysts. Amid intensifying competition, the launch of a rollable device could be a way for Samsung to regain the spotlight through innovation and set new engineering standards.

Manufacturing rollable displays is a significantly more complex task compared to their foldable counterparts. The main challenge lies in ensuring the roll-out mechanism operates reliably over hundreds or thousands of cycles without causing waviness, creases, or surface deformations. All components – including rotating shafts, internal matrix layers, and support components – require flawless manufacturing precision while maintaining minimal thickness and weight for convenient everyday use.

Samsung has been conducting relevant experiments for quite some time. At CES 2023, developers showcased the Flex Hybrid concept, which combined folding and unfolding capabilities, and later that same year, at SID Display Week, they impressed the audience with a working prototype of the Rollable Flex, which expanded a compact 49-millimeter panel to over 254 mm. This is more than five times the original size, which is an exceptionally impressive feat.

If successfully implemented, such a phone could radically transform the industry: with compact dimensions that fit in a pocket, it could transform into a virtually full-fledged tablet for watching videos, multitasking across multiple apps, or performing demanding tasks – all without the noticeable crease typical of current flexible models.

If Samsung manages to deliver a premium product experience that justifies the anticipated high price, this move will mark the next major milestone in the transformation of mobile phone design. It will be incredibly exciting to watch this process unfold. The Galaxy Slide – or whatever its final name may be – has the potential to completely change our perception of screens in portable devices.
