The cult-favorite pirate co-op action game Sea of Thieves is set to be adapted into a feature film. The respected publication Entertainment Weekly reported that development on the upcoming film has begun. The project is currently in the very early stages, and the director’s chair remains vacant. However, it’s already known that the film will be produced by renowned filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming hit Spider-Man: A New Day.” His own production company, Hisako Films, will handle production. Audiences can look forward to a story full of adventure, fun, and a huge amount of treasure.

Matt Booty, Chief Content Officer of the Xbox division, commented on the announcement, noting that adapting such a unique universe requires a special approach. According to him, Sea of Thieves has no classic main characters or a rigid storyline, as the key element of the game is the player themselves and the interaction within a very friendly community. Matt Boothe emphasized that the upcoming film will primarily draw on the unique social atmosphere and spirit of cooperation inherent in the original game.

Industry analysts note that the Sea of Thieves adaptation has much stronger and more compelling justifications for its existence than, for example, the Call of Duty franchise film announced for 2025 (scheduled for release in June 2028). Streaming platforms and movie theaters are already oversaturated with military action films that are hard to distinguish from shooters – all it takes is adding the CoD brand to a series like Terminal List to get a ready-made version of Modern Warfare. In contrast, in the pirate genre, Sea of Thieves has virtually no competitors, aside from the obvious example of Pirates of the Caribbean, with which an official crossover took place in the game several years ago. There are simply no other large-scale analogues in modern cinema.

Experts believe that the open-world nature of Sea of Thieves and the lack of ties to the audience’s fixed expectations regarding specific characters give the project a high chance of success. Under these conditions, it is much easier for the creators to avoid the minor details that fans often criticize in other adaptations. Among the possible formats for a future release, even the creation of a high-quality animated film in the classic Disney or Pixar style is being considered, which, according to reviewers, could be a much more promising solution than a big-budget live-action film overloaded with computer graphics.
