In 2025, Ukraine ranked fourth among the largest European markets for battery energy storage systems (BESS). According to the European Battery Market Outlook 2026–2030 report published by SolarPower Europe, the volume of new capacity commissioned in the country increased fivefold and approached 3 GWh.
Only Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy ranked ahead of the Ukrainian market, while Bulgaria rounded out the top five. The rapid expansion of this sector was driven by a critical need to ensure energy security and enhance the resilience of the entire system.
Over 60% of new battery capacity was allocated to distributed generation. Private households, businesses, educational institutions, medical facilities, water supply facilities, and other critical infrastructure elements actively deployed storage systems alongside solar power plants to provide backup power. At the same time, industrial batteries accounted for about 33% of newly installed capacity, which added flexibility and enabled grid balancing services.
According to Vladislav Sokolovsky, who heads the board of the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine (SEAU), residents of both apartment buildings and single-family homes are purchasing small systems for one purpose only – to make it easier to cope with power outages.
The average capacity of residential batteries in Ukraine is only 3–5 kWh, which is roughly half the European average, and a significant portion of them are not connected to solar panels at all. In addition, the development of the residential segment is significantly influenced by mass purchases of portable charging stations with a capacity of 0.6–2.5 kWh, which citizens buy specifically as a backup in case of blackouts, the executive noted.
Across Europe as a whole, a record 36 GWh of newly installed battery systems was recorded in 2025. This figure has been growing at an unprecedented rate for 12 consecutive years, and the continent’s total installed battery capacity has surpassed the 100 GWh mark for the first time.
