Warner Bros. continues to bring the Looney Tunes universe back to the big screens, and Speedy Gonzalez will become the next hero of the franchise. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the legendary “fastest mouse in Mexico” will get his own feature film. The project will be directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, known for his work on The Book of Life, El Tigre, and the recent animated film El Guapo vs. the Drug Vampires. In December, the director already hinted at the development of the film, but no screenwriter has been appointed yet, and plot details remain unknown.

The character of Speedy Gonzalez was created by Robert McKimson and Fritz Freling. His first appearance was in the 1953 short film Cat-Tails for Two, and his official debut under his own name took place in 1955. Since then, the character has become one of the most popular Looney Tunes supporting characters and has gained particular support among Latin American audiences due to his charisma and constant victories over characters such as Sylvester and Daffy Duck.

Speedy has also made regular appearances in other projects in the franchise, including video games, advertising campaigns for Virgin Media and Volkswagen, and the 2021 film Space Jam: A New Legacy” in 2021.
Warner Bros. has been trying to launch a solo project about Speedy since 2010. At that time, it was planned to involve George Lopez in voicing the character, and in 2016, actor Eugenio Derbez was attached to the project. However, development was repeatedly halted due to concerns about possible cultural controversy, despite the character’s steady popularity among Spanish-speaking audiences.
After bringing back such characters as Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and Wile E. Coyote, Warner Bros. is now ready to give Speedy Gonzalez a chance. More details about the movie are expected after the official announcement of the studio.
