Craig Mazin, the showrunner of The Last of Us, said that the project’s story cannot be logically completed in three seasons. According to him, a full-fledged finale may require not only an extended third season, but also a fourth.
In an interview with Collider, Mazin explained that the events of the second season have significantly complicated the overall plot structure. This became especially noticeable after the release of the sixth episode, which takes viewers back to Ellie and Joel’s past and reveals key emotional moments in their relationship. These scenes, according to the showrunners, lay the foundation for further development of the story.

According to Mazin, the season two finale creates the need for a longer timeline for the next installments. He emphasized that the team aims not to accelerate events artificially, but to give the characters and drama enough space for development.
[Spoiler alert!]
Separately, the showrunner commented on the audience’s reaction to Joel’s death, which many viewers took more emotionally than expected. Mazin admitted that he was surprised by how many people did not know about this plot twist, despite the popularity of the original game. At the same time, he noted that the reaction of the series’ fans was more mature and empathetic than that of the gaming community.

Mazin also noted the contribution of Pedro Pascal, who played Joel. According to him, the actor has a special “emotional charisma” that forms a strong connection between the character and the viewer. According to the showrunners, this is what made the loss of the character so painful for the audience.
The HBO project continues to be one of the most successful series on the platform, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay. The character of Abby in the second season was portrayed by Caitlin Dever, whose work, according to Mazin, received positive feedback even from critical fans.

Together with the game’s creative director Neil Druckmann, the series’ team follows a long-term planning strategy. This means that the final structure of the story is formed in advance, even if it takes more seasons to complete than originally expected.
In this way, HBO is actually preparing the ground for the long-term development of the franchise, and fans should tune in to the fact that the story of The Last of Us can stretch for at least four seasons.
