When I was offered the chance to review the premium Logitech G923 gaming wheel, I was a bit surprised—racing games have never been my go-to genre. However, there’s an important topic I want to discuss, and it directly relates to the G923. This wheel can serve as a kind of substitute—like a sugar alternative for gamers with a specific need. And not just that—it provides the perfect example to explain the situation in detail.

The Logitech G923 is priced at up to $485 / €450, though with frequent discounts, it can drop to around $360 / €337. That price includes the full set: the wheel and a three-pedal unit.
The Logitech G923 comes in standard packaging, without additional foam or polypropylene protection. Inside the box, you’ll find the wheel, a three-pedal set, a user manual, and a few informational brochures. Also, don’t forget the power adapter—it’s essential, as the wheel won’t function without it.
Design
First of all, it’s worth noting that the G923 isn’t a new model. It was officially released in August 2020, but it’s often mistaken for the G29 due to their nearly identical design. And that’s not a bad thing—it’s actually great. When something works well, there’s no need to change it just for the sake of change.
The build quality is somewhat old-school but satisfactory. The wheel features perforated synthetic leather, plenty of plastic, but also metal where it matters. There’s a good mix of specialized buttons, standard gamepad controls, and even a dedicated PlayStation button. At the top, you’ll find LED indicators for real-time feedback.
The pedals connect via a port that strongly resembles an RS232 connector, though I can’t confirm if it actually is. If it is, that would be yet another indicator of the model’s old-school design. Let’s move on.
Specifications
And then there are the specifications. The dimensions of the steering wheel are 270×260×278 mm and weigh 2.25 kg. The steering wheel can be rotated 900 degrees with edge point fixation, and the control sensors have a Hall effect. There is overheating protection. Pedals are 167×428×311 mm, weight – 3.1 kg. There is a fixation on the mat, automatic calibration. The warranty for the G923 is limited to 2 years.
Interestingly, thanks to its support for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, the G923—like many other Logitech G devices—can serve as a family-friendly accessory. It offers not only a chance for shared gaming experiences but also an opportunity to teach children basic car control skills in a safe environment.
Social component
Overall, the concept of family entertainment through simulators is a new and, frankly, original idea from Logitech G.
The company emphasizes the social connection between adults and children under the term “kidults,” as both adults and kids naturally share the same level of excitement for the game, cheering together and celebrating victories as a team.
Sugar substitute?
Here we come to the topic I mentioned earlier about sugar substitutes and gamers with diabetes. The thing is, gamers in Ukraine will gradually be drawn to increasingly intense game genres for, I think, an obvious reason. This won’t be a conscious choice.
The news, the explosions of Shaheds overhead, and nuclear threats all work on the subconscious. Personally, even though I have almost 1500 games across different platforms, the last five games I’ve played have been shooters: Call of Duty, Battlefield, Fallout, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
When I play strategy games, for example, it’s not SimCity, but Warhammer 40,000 or Company of Heroes. These are also not exactly pacifist games. Violence in games often helps relieve tension and aggression, much like heavy music – this has been proven many times.
But I’m afraid the process might go too far. Instead of relieving tension, it will end up adding more. And I might not notice it because it will become the new norm. Maybe it’s already happened, and I just haven’t noticed it yet.
Sugar substitute
So, what does this have to do with the steering wheel, the Logitech G923, and the sugar substitute? Well, shooters are like sugar—quick energy that can harm you in the long run. Racing games, on the other hand, could become a substitute for sugar. But to make that switch, a cheap steering wheel might not be enough, especially if this type of controller is unfamiliar to you.
It’s like what happened to me years ago, in a different life, when I bought a cheap gamepad— not from Logitech G—and tried to learn to play FIFA with it. Let’s just say I quickly lost interest. Back then, I didn’t know that cheap and expensive gamepads work differently, and the feeling they give you is also different. You should never start with the cheapest option, especially if you’re looking for specific features, like TrueForce in Logitech G.
It might sound strange or extreme, but I have a strong aversion to vibrations in gamepads. If I can’t turn them off, I won’t play, because it’s uncomfortable for me. The gamepad is small, light, and my fingers aren’t used to pressing the buttons and moving the sensitive stick— and then on top of that, it vibrates, forcing me to grip the gamepad more tightly. My fingers get tense, and pressing the buttons becomes more difficult. Is this just a matter of getting used to it? Yes, it’s a matter of habit, but that habit won’t form unless there’s an actual enjoyment in it.
With the steering wheel, it’s the opposite. It vibrates, you grip the wheel tighter, and your hold improves. You understand why the wheel is vibrating, and it adds to the feeling that you’re really driving a car, especially when it’s not on a paved road but, for example, off-road.
In this case, the haptic feedback provides more stimulation. More adrenaline, more excitement, and more fun— exactly what you expect from a game. So, in theory, I could gain just as much from a tough round in Call of Duty as from a few intense laps in Assetto Corsa or Insane 2. In theory.
TrueForce
In practice? It takes getting used to. Adjusting to the idea that you need to work more with your hands isn’t a problem. The real challenge lies in sensitivity and hand-eye coordination. Don’t forget, in addition to the steering wheel, there are also three pedals. And if you don’t have a driver’s license—like me—then the adaptation process might take a bit longer than you’d expect.
Additionally, not all games support TrueForce. In fact, the list is quite small—this was the case at launch. However, the supported titles now include Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista 2, Dirt Rally 2.0, F1 22 to 24, iRacing, Project Cars 3, WRC Generations, even BeamNG Drive, and more. As for general compatibility with racing games, there’s no need to worry. If there’s one steering wheel model that’s almost universally supported, it’s this one.
Drawbacks
I’ll also mention a downside of the wheel. The Logitech G923 is equipped with TrueForce feedback, so it’s obvious that the vibrations can be loud. This isn’t like a keyboard and mouse that you can use while someone is sleeping on the other side of the room. The volume of the sound will be noticeable in the video above.
However, if we take into account the fact that no racing wheel in the world is completely silent, the noise level can actually be seen as an advantage. Why? Because it supports the “Play Together” concept. If you’re playing while someone is sitting nearby, the louder the game, the more immersed they’ll feel — they’ll get more adrenaline, even just by sitting next to you. And even if this person doesn’t want to play or isn’t into it, they’ll still be caught up in the excitement.
Conclusions
The Logitech G923 is considered by professionals to be an entry-level model. Yes, with a price tag under $500, it’s categorized as “entry-level” for this type of device. But don’t think for a second that this model is basic.
It will easily meet your racing, adrenaline, and speed needs, and it’s simple to get the hang of. You’ll adapt quickly, and then you can either play casually or upgrade to something more expensive—even within the Logitech G lineup.
