Apple and Osram partnership on the coming Watch Ultra displays axed

-

The partnership for the coming Watch Ultra display by Apple and Osram has come to an end. This means that Apple is shifting the use of new microLED screen panels on the Apple Watch Ultra series for a few years. Apple has previously shifted the arrival of this coming model with the new displays till 2027 due to production issues, but this new development brings a new turn of events.

According to the Austrian display manufacturer, its “cornerstone project underpinning its microLED strategy got unexpectedly cancelled.” The firm avoids stating that Apple cancelled its order for new microLED panels with them. However, the firm goes on to state that this turn of events is “triggering the company to re-assess its microLED strategy.”

Apple and Osram partnership on the coming Watch Ultra displays axed

The reason for the cancellation of this project by Apple is not stated by Osram in their official press statement. A popular tipster Ming-Chi Kuo states that the termination of this Apple and Osram partnership is a result of production cost. The tech giant, according to reports, says that the production cost of these new microLED panels is too high.

But why cancel if the product might add value to the coming Watch Ultra 3? Well, Apple doesn’t seem to see how these new microLED screen panels will be of any benefit to their coming product. So does the termination of the Apple and Osram partnership mean that the Watch Ultra 3 will be further delayed?

The termination of this partnership might not mean the delay of the coming Watch Ultra 3. Apple might just move over to source microLED panels from other supplies for use on the coming watches. So we can expect to see the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 soon, despite this turn of events.
