On the night of August 21, Russia carried out a large-scale combined strike using drones and missiles. Targets included the Donetsk, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, and Zakarpattia regions. Among the sites hit was a facility in Mukachevo belonging to the U.S. company Flex.
“Today Mukachevo came under a targeted attack by enemy cruise missiles. The strike hit a civilian enterprise that employed thousands of people from our community and district,” wrote Mayor Andriy Baloga on Facebook. “Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but the attack caused a large fire and several people were injured. They are receiving all necessary assistance.”
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that a missile “hit a large U.S.-owned electronics plant in our westernmost region, causing significant damage and casualties. This is a purely civilian facility with no connection to defense or the military.”
The Flex plant is located about 800 kilometers from the front line. It produces components for global companies including Google, Microsoft, Nike, and Lenovo, and employs more than 2,600 people. At the time of the strike, around 600 employees were working the night shift. When the air raid alert was issued, they were moved to a designated shelter within the facility.
As of 12:30 p.m. on August 21, 19 people were reported injured, according to Myroslav Biletskyi, head of the Zakarpattia Regional Administration. “Ten individuals were taken to St. Martin’s Hospital in Mukachevo by emergency medical teams. A total of 16 teams were involved – 15 standard crews and one additional unit providing psychological support. Another nine people sought medical help on their own,” he wrote on Facebook.
The Flex plant in Mukachevo has been operating for more than 13 years, with production facilities covering 55,000 square meters. Following the missile strike, a large fire broke out at the site, causing heavy smoke in the surrounding area.
According to representatives of the Ukrainian Air Force Command, on the night of August 21 (from 6:40 p.m. on August 20), Russia launched 614 aerial attack units against Ukraine. Specifically:
- 574 Shahed-type strike UAVs and various types of drone simulators
- 4 Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” aeroballistic missiles
- 2 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles
- 19 Kh-101 cruise missiles
- 14 Kalibr cruise missiles
- 1 missile of unknown type.
As of 09:00, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down/suppressed 577 air targets:
- 546 enemy Shahed-type drones and various types of drone simulators
- 1 Kh-47M2 “Kinzhal” aeroballistic missile
- 18 Kh-101 cruise missiles
- 12 Kalibr cruise missiles.
