Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs have entered into a multi-year licensing agreement and launched a broader strategic partnership, under which they plan to create a new platform for legally generating music using AI. This contract marks ElevenLabs’ first partnership with a major record label, and the upcoming project will differ significantly from their existing ElevenMusic software. In addition, both companies intend to jointly develop new AI-based audio products that artists will be able to use, as noted in an official press release from Universal Music Group.
The latest AI-powered creative software does not yet have an official name and is currently in development with no announced release date. The product is primarily intended for music enthusiasts who want to create their own remixes and mashups of tracks by artists who have agreed to participate and receive fair compensation. The toolkit from ElevenLabs will also allow users to generate new interpretations of tracks and personalized vocal arrangements.
The music industry has long had a complex relationship with the emergence of AI. Just a few months ago, a coalition of major labels, including Universal Music Group, called for a ban on low-quality tracks created using AI from appearing on global charts. At the same time, numerous lawsuits between rights holders and developers of such technologies – notably Suno and Udio – have been actively discussed in recent years over copyright infringements.
However, many of these cases – including Warner’s 2024 lawsuit against Udio – ultimately resulted in swift settlements and the signing of licensing agreements. In particular, this week, representatives from Suno announced that the release of their new music model, version 6, marked the official start of partnerships with labels such as Warner and BMG.
