The competition among developers of cutting-edge AI systems is increasingly shifting toward the creation of the hardware on which the most advanced models run. According to a report by The Information, Anthropic is currently exploring the possibility of designing its own custom chips, bringing South Korean giant Samsung on board for the project.
For Anthropic, this initiative is not a spur-of-the-moment decision. Back in mid-spring, the company conducted a detailed analysis of the prospects for launching its own semiconductor production, seeking to safeguard its technical infrastructure against a potential chip shortage in the market. It appears that the developers have now finally moved on to the practical implementation of this plan.

As noted in the publication, Anthropic has not yet decided on a specific application for its future silicon product or the exact computing power it is expected to deliver. Company representatives refrained from officially confirming the collaboration with Samsung, but in a comment to TechCrunch, they emphasized that their current diversified infrastructure – which combines solutions from Google, Amazon, and NVIDIA – will continue to play a key role in their overall strategy for securing computing power.
Anthropic’s desire to begin producing custom chips seems entirely logical, as many players in the AI sector are already taking similar steps. This allows them to tailor their hardware to specific computing tasks or to partially free themselves from their reliance on Nvidia’s supply chain. At the same time, the timing of the announcement regarding a potential partnership is particularly significant in this context.
Anthropic’s main rival, OpenAI, very recently unveiled its own specialized inference chip, developed in collaboration with Broadcom. According to OpenAI, this processor, codenamed Jalapeño, demonstrates higher efficiency and significantly outperforms modern general-purpose AI GPUs in terms of performance per watt during initial testing. It was precisely this move by competitors that may have prompted Anthropic to accelerate the development of its own silicon hardware.
It is worth noting that Samsung holds strategic positions in the global supply chain for AI hardware. The South Korean corporation is one of NVIDIA’s most important partners, manufacturing components without which the training and deployment of advanced AI systems would be impossible. Furthermore, NVIDIA’s software tools are directly integrated into the Asian tech giant’s production cycles.
Samsung is currently working with NVIDIA to build a specialized AI chip manufacturing plant in South Korea and, according to available information, is in talks with Google regarding contract chip manufacturing. Furthermore, the Korean manufacturer has already signed agreements with Tesla to produce its next-generation AI processors.
