Anthropic has announced the launch of a new feature called Claude Tag, which allows teams to interact with Claude directly in Slack. The way it works is quite simple: after adding Claude to a Slack workspace and granting it access to selected channels, users can mention @Claude in conversations and ask it to perform various tasks. Claude then uses connected tools and data sources to fulfill the request and posts the results in the relevant Slack discussion thread.

Claude Tag differs from typical chatbots in that it is designed as a shared assistant for the entire team, rather than for an individual user. All chat participants interact with the same instance of Claude. This allows them to view current tasks, track progress, and continue processes started by their colleagues.

Additionally, according to Anthropic, the AI is capable of gradually building context by analyzing discussions in the channels to which it has access. This means users don’t have to repeatedly provide the same background information for new queries.

The system is also designed for asynchronous operation. Users don’t have to wait for a response in the chat – they can assign a specific task to Claude and return to it later once it’s complete. According to Anthropic, Claude is capable of breaking down more complex requests into several steps and using connected tools to carry them out. Additionally, the system can schedule follow-up actions and continue working on projects over an extended period of time.
Another feature allows Claude to keep users informed about progress and remind them of pending tasks when a special “ambient” mode is enabled. Anthropic reports that it is already using this tool for software development, data analysis, workflow support, and code debugging. According to the company, approximately 65% of the code written by the team working on Anthropic’s products is currently generated using an internal version of Claude Tag.

The tool also features additional control mechanisms that will be of interest to organizations that prioritize security. Administrators can specify which channels, tools, and data sources Claude will have access to. Additionally, separate instances of Claude can be configured for different departments to maintain a certain level of data isolation between teams. In addition, administrators can view activity logs, analyze completed tasks, and set spending limits for both the entire organization and individual channels.

Claude Tag is now available in beta for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers. The tool is powered by the Claude Opus 4.8 model, which was introduced in May of this year. Claude Tag will also gradually replace the current Claude app for Slack. Existing users will be able to transition to the new system during a 30-day migration period, and some customers will receive starter credits to help them evaluate the new tool’s capabilities.
