The technological confrontation between Apple and Google in the messaging sphere is reaching a new level, with user privacy becoming a top priority. Apple has officially confirmed that it will soon add support for end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, which will allow secure communication between iPhone and Android device owners. This decision was the result of a large-scale cooperation with the GSMA, which introduced the updated Universal Profile 3.0 standard.

RCS

Previously, despite the integration of RCS into iOS 18, correspondence between different platforms remained vulnerable because it did not have iMessage-like security. Now, thanks to the use of the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, data will be encrypted directly on the sender’s device and decrypted only at the recipient’s. This makes it impossible for third parties, including telecom operators or application developers, to access the content of conversations. Apple noted that it actively contributed to the creation of this standard in order to transfer its many years of experience in protecting iMessage to a cross-platform environment.

RCS

In a comment to the publication, Google supported this initiative, promising to integrate the new specifications into the Android ecosystem as quickly as possible. Although the specific timing of the updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS has not yet been disclosed, testing of the feature has already begun in beta versions of the software. In addition to security, the update will retain all the benefits of modern messaging: print indicators, text response, and high-quality media file transfer. Thus, the transition to the new RCS standard effectively erases the technical privacy barriers that have separated users of the two most popular mobile operating systems for years.
