A Complete Overhaul of Analytics in Threads: What the Developers Kept Hidden

Threads is radically revamping its internal analytics, adding in-depth details while completely removing data on link clicks. The analytics section now features AI-powered summaries and contextual insights into how individual posts are performing.

If you’re an active Threads user, you probably know that most posts are entirely dependent on the platform’s recommendation algorithm. Since the app displays a feed of recommendations by default and also pushes some of this content to Facebook and Instagram feeds, the algorithm is what generates the bulk of views for most users – even those with a massive following.

However, this algorithm has long remained something of a mystery even to regular users and the network’s most popular creators. Now, Meta is trying to help users better understand what drives their engagement (or why it drops) by introducing revamped analytics with expanded contextual data on the performance of each post.

The updated metrics dashboard now includes summaries for individual posts and the account as a whole, generated using Meta AI. As the AI analysis of one of the recent posts explains, a single post received approximately 8 times more views than the author’s previous posts, and its reach was also higher, although the number of positive comments was lower than usual.

In addition, the statistics panel continues to display detailed figures such as the number of views, unique viewers, likes, and reposts, but now it also clearly indicates whether these metrics are higher, lower, or in line with other recent posts. The platform has long promoted the interests of niche communities, so the updated analytics can identify which specific communities are driving the most engagement for a particular post.

Similarly, at the profile level, these metrics allow users to assess the overall state of their presence on Threads from a broader perspective. In its August report, the AI summary noted that the month was relatively quiet: views dropped by 75%, and engagement also declined. The audience consisted mostly of men aged 35 to 44, with the Tech Threads and AI Threads sections leading in viewership, while subscribers tended to gravitate toward Book Threads. These findings are hardly a big surprise, but certain details prove extremely useful if you’re looking to regain your previous reach. Specifically, the system highlights the days of the week and times of day when reach metrics were at their best.

At the same time, one notable detail that has disappeared from the updated analytics tool is link click-through statistics. Last year, Threads introduced link performance data, explaining that it was intended to help creators expand their reach beyond the platform. Despite this, many content creators continued to believe that the algorithms were reducing the visibility of posts containing URLs, and media data from the past year showed that users very rarely clicked on links within the app.

The company has now completely removed any statistics regarding link clicks. This happened even before the release of the latest update, although the exact timing of the feature’s removal remains unknown. However, such data is also absent from the new, expanded analytics. It’s hard to say definitively whether this is related to a shift in Meta’s priorities or is a result of users’ indifference to venturing beyond the platform. At the very least, this makes one thing clear: as Meta evolves and focuses on its own communities, it is once again de-emphasizing external content.
