For years, Samsung has been trying to convince users that a smartphone with elongated proportions that looks like a remote control is the pinnacle of innovation. It didn’t work. Now, it seems that the engineers in Suwon have finally reconsidered the approach, or at least paid attention to the competition and concluded that horizontal space matters.
The latest leaks from the tech community, including the results of the system interface analysis, indicate that the upcoming Galaxy Fold 8 Wide could end the era of “narrow” foldable smartphones. It’s not just another minor upgrade to the specs, but a fundamental recognition that the previous almost square proportions created serious inconveniences for productive work. After years of watching high-profile announcements, this turn looks like a necessary course correction.
The design of Galaxy Fold 8 Wide is confirmed by the internal code designation “H8”. The new aspect ratio of 1.3:1 replaces the cramped 1.11:1 format that was used previously. The leaked One UI 9 animations also feature an improved screen mirroring system. When folded, the device will have a width of 82.2 mm, which should improve ergonomics. In general, Samsung is changing its development vector, moving to a wider form factor to compete with global players.
The clue came in the form of the line “H8” found in the code. Software researchers analyzing new system animations found this designation in the part responsible for the mirroring function. In Samsung’s internal logic, the letter “H” usually means significant changes in the hardware. Thanks to the extraction of this data, experts were actually able to reconstruct the physical parameters of the device even before the official renders appeared. This is a typical example of a leak. Obviously, One UI 9 is already adapting to a wider display. It seems that the development team no longer wants to adjust the multi-window mode to the narrow vertical space, which resembled a receipt strap rather than a full-fledged tablet screen.
The move to a 1.3:1 aspect ratio means a radical change from the almost square 1.11:1 format of previous Folds. It is estimated that this configuration actually brings the device closer to the 4:3 format. This is important because such a screen better meets the natural needs of the user. When unfolded, the H8 becomes not only larger, but also more practical for everyday scenarios. Web pages will no longer look compressed, and videos will not be buried in black borders. At the same time, a wider display means a wider body when folded. At more than 82 mm, it’s already a rather massive device that will take up a lot of space in your pocket.
Special attention is drawn to leaks related to the updated screen mirroring function. The animations show that Samsung is finally optimizing the interaction between the external and internal displays. Previously, switching between them often looked unstable. Now the interface is likely to work as a single continuous system.
Whether this approach can take the foldable smartphone segment beyond the niche market remains to be seen. However, the very fact that Samsung is moving to a wider format seems to be a logical step and indicates a rejection of the concept of elongated narrow devices.
