Google’s standalone AI assistant, Spark, is now integrated with the company’s Chrome web browser. Once you sign in to Chrome, Spark can “use your active profiles and saved passwords to handle tedious tasks online.”

Since this is a modern AI-powered tool, the routine web tasks Spark handles primarily involve “searching for flight options and initiating the booking process.”

The company also noted that the technology can be used to “schedule viewings of rented or purchased homes.” These are the only two use cases that Google has come up with. Engadget has already reached out to the company requesting further clarification on exactly what this integration offers to average users.

For those who are wary of sharing their passwords and login credentials with an AI assistant, Google highlighted the presence of certain security measures. The company claims to have implemented tools to prevent so-called “prompt injections” – situations where malicious websites or user-generated content contain hidden instructions. Such instructions can force the assistant to perform unwanted actions, “such as making financial transfers or stealing confidential information.”

Google has not disclosed specific details about how these protective tools work, limiting itself to a statement about “investing in a multi-layered protection system that combines deterministic and probabilistic methods, which significantly complicates and increases the cost of potential attacks for attackers.” In addition, Spark will not process the final payment on its own but will return the process to the user for verification and completion of the transaction. This is indeed a positive feature.

This new feature is currently rolling out in the U.S., and the list of regions will expand in the future. To mark the occasion, Google recently made Spark available to Google AI Pro subscribers in over 160 countries. In addition, the AI assistant supports integration with apps in the Google Workspace ecosystem.
