Down with the monotony: Huawei is preparing a unique smartphone with an ultra-wide screen

Most modern flagship smartphones look exactly the same from the front. For many years, the market has been dominated by the same format – elongated, narrow and tall “bars” with an aspect ratio of 20:9. However, Huawei seems to have decided to put an end to this monotony. According to well-known insiders at Digital Chat Station and Smart Pikachu, the manufacturer is currently testing a classic monoblock without a flexible display that will have non-standard 16:10 proportions. This step will create a significantly wider body, which will provide a traditional smartphone with the ergonomics and advantages of a mini-tablet. The release of this ambitious project is tentatively scheduled for December 2026.

The change in screen proportions may seem minor at first glance, but it’s not. Equipped with a 6.39-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, this device will be noticeably wider than any popular flagship Android smartphone. Its dimensions will resemble the internal display of a small foldable device rather than the usual elongated monoblock.

This increase in horizontal area significantly increases the convenience of working with several applications on a split screen, watching widescreen videos, and studying documents. Huawei has already demonstrated the attractiveness of this format by releasing the foldable Pura X model. Now the same idea is proposed to be implemented in a traditional case – without a swivel hinge, a huge markup, and risks associated with structural reliability.

Thanks to the 2K resolution, the pixel density remains at the level of top-end devices, despite the increased size of the workspace. At the same time, the aesthetic nuances, including the configuration and appearance of the rear camera unit, are still unknown at the current stage of prototype testing.

The main sensor with a resolution of 50 megapixels and an optical format of 1/1.3 inches is a proven and strong solution for this segment – many flagships of 2026 will have similar dimensions. A much more interesting element is the periscopic telephoto lens, which also has a 50-megapixel sensor. The combination of two 50-megapixel modules with different focal lengths provides the camera system with true versatility, favorably distinguishing it from standard sets of wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. Complementing this rear system is a multispectral sensor designed for more accurate color reproduction and more efficient light processing. In addition to a powerful 7000 mAh battery, the device is expected to support wireless charging technology.

According to a Smart Pikachu insider, the new product is aimed at the “middle and higher market segments,” meaning that it is deliberately placed below the most expensive flagships of the Mate line. This is a very interesting strategy. Thanks to its 7000 mAh battery, Kirin 9000 series processor, and unique display format at a price lower than that of the Mate, this smartphone is able to attract its own audience – users who are looking for something out of the box but are not ready to overpay for the Pura X. However, it will not be possible to assess whether the final design and price tag will be able to justify this positioning until December.
