“Just for fun”: Microsoft advises against relying on its AI Copilot for important decisions

Microsoft actually admits that the advice of its AI assistant Copilot should not be treated as a reliable source. However, this may change in the near future, but the current version of the Terms of Use demonstrates a rather restrained confidence in the product’s capabilities.

Here’s an example of how Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella promoted Copilot last August on the X platform. In a series of posts, he noted that the tool had “quickly become part of his daily workflow” and suggested that people use it to ask questions like: “Are we on track with the [Product] launch in November? Check the engineering progress, the results of the pilot program, the risks. Estimate the probability.”

However, if Copilot is reading this now, the situation has changed somewhat, so, relatively speaking, it would be wise to put on a big red clown nose when it gives Nadella these probabilities, because it is now positioned more as a tool for entertainment.

The October 24, 2025 update to Copilot’s Terms of Service explicitly emphasizes this: “Copilot is intended for entertainment purposes only. It may make mistakes and work incorrectly. Do not rely on Copilot for important decisions. You use Copilot at your own risk.” This wording seems even harsher than in the 2000 Miss Cleo ad, which, despite the statement “Tarot card accuracy is amazing,” said only “For entertainment purposes only.”

At the same time, PCMag received a more optimistic comment from an unnamed Microsoft representative on this disclaimer. According to him, the “entertainment purposes” wording is a legacy of the initial stage when Copilot was launched as a complementary search service to Bing. He added that with the development of the product, this phrase no longer corresponds to the actual way it is used and will be changed in one of the next updates.
