The next Firefox update will introduce a feature that many users consider the most useful AI innovation in recent times. It’s not about new algorithms or chatbots, but about the ability to completely disable all AI tools with a single switch.

Mozilla has announced that Firefox 148 will have a separate section for managing AI functions in the browser settings. The update will be available on February 24, and users of the Firefox Nightly test branch can already try out the new features.

The new section is designed as a centralized control panel for generative browser functions. The key element will be the main switch that allows users to instantly block both current and future Firefox AI tools. In this way, users will have an easy way to opt out of automated functions without having to search for individual options in different menus.

At launch, the control system will cover several functions at once. They include automatic page translation, alternative text generation for PDFs, AI tab grouping, a link preview tool with a brief summary of the page content, and an AI chatbot in the browser sidebar.

Activating the option to block AI improvements not only disables all these features, but also disables the display of messages and notifications about future AI features. This means that the user will no longer receive recommendations or offers to enable new AI tools.

Mozilla also emphasizes that the selected settings will be saved after the browser update. Users will be able to change the settings or re-activate certain functions at any time. The new control section will first appear in Firefox Nightly test builds and then become part of the stable release at the end of the month.

Despite the emergence of a full-fledged “AI off switch,” Mozilla does not plan to abandon the development of artificial intelligence in the browser. At the same time, the company recognizes that some users are tired of automated tools being imposed and want to have more control over what technologies work in their browser.
