Nintendo Switch 2 ended 2025 with 4.4 million consoles sold in the United States, officially cementing its status as the fastest-selling home platform in the history of the U.S. market. These data were released by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella. The figure covers the first 7 months after the launch in mid-2025 and demonstrates the consistently high interest in Nintendo’s hybrid concept almost 10 years after the first Switch redefined the concept of portable consoles.

The Switch 2’s dynamics look convincing even against the backdrop of the most high-profile hardware launches of the last two generations. According to Circana’s estimates, the installed base is almost 2 times faster than the original Switch at the same stage of its life cycle. At the same time, the new product is about 35% ahead of the PlayStation 4 in the first months after its release, a period that was once considered a benchmark for the console market.

The pace slowed slightly during the holiday quarter. Sales of the Switch 2 were about 35% lower than the first Switch in its debut Christmas season. Nevertheless, the overall growth trajectory remained positive. Market analysts estimate the new console’s launch performance as statistically unprecedented for the home segment in the United States.

Commenting on the situation for Nintendo Life, Piscatella noted that the Game Boy Advance still holds the record for the strongest launch among all hardware categories. At the same time, the Switch 2’s adoption rate shows exceptionally strong interest from both loyal audiences and new customers. According to him, backward compatibility with the previous generation and enhanced hardware capabilities played a significant role in maintaining demand, which helped to keep the sales pace during the first two fiscal quarters.

The new generation of the console logically continues Nintendo’s design philosophy of combining stationary and portable use cases. The Switch 2 takes this concept further with a faster processor, improved display technology, and increased energy efficiency. It is these features that have helped to maintain the platform’s appeal in both mobile and TV-connected modes.

Against this backdrop, the market is also reacting to the related processes around the new console. For example, GameStop recently patched a vulnerability in the Switch 2 exchange program that allowed individual users to receive improper financial benefits. For many development studios, the versatility of the hybrid platform remains a key advantage as optimizing games for different console generations becomes increasingly complex and resource-intensive.

At the same time, the industry is facing new challenges. Rising component costs, renewed risks associated with tariff policy, and the increased adoption of AI-based design processes are creating an uncertain pricing environment for 2026. Nevertheless, the current sales pace of Switch 2 provides Nintendo with a strong leadership in the hardware segment. For a console entering the second financial year of its life cycle, this is a rare and strategically important achievement.
