The integration of ChatGPT into the iPhone did not meet OpenAI’s expectations, which is why the company is considering a lawsuit against Apple. Sources claim that OpenAI lawyers are already working with an external law firm to assess possible legal steps against Apple.
During the Worldwide Developers Conference in 2024, Apple announced the integration of ChatGPT into Siri. This decision came amid constant delays in the launch of the AI version of Siri and growing criticism from users. The integration gave Siri users access to a limited set of ChatGPT-based features.

It is reported that OpenAI expected the partnership to increase the number of registrations in ChatGPT and subscription sales among Apple users. However, these expectations do not seem to have been realized. Although iPhone owners could subscribe to ChatGPT directly through the iOS settings menu, the results of the two-year partnership with Apple and its mobile ecosystem allegedly turned out to be much weaker than OpenAI expected.

According to the sources, OpenAI believes that the implementation of ChatGPT in Siri confused users and made it difficult to use the features. Bloomberg sources reported that the company tried to renegotiate the terms of cooperation with Apple, but no significant progress has been made so far.
Bloomberg also reports that Apple is not fully optimistic about the partnership with OpenAI due to concerns about the AI company’s privacy standards and its active entry into the hardware market after hiring legendary former Apple designer Jony Ive. It is reported that OpenAI is working on a line of AI devices that are supposed to replace smartphones, including smart glasses.

At the same time, Apple is also exploring cooperation with other AI companies. Earlier, the company confirmed that the updated version of Siri, which may be presented this year, is based on Google’s Gemini models. Apple may also allow users to choose between several third-party AI models, which means that OpenAI may lose the status of an exclusive AI partner for iPhone users.
