OpenAI is preparing to introduce its first physical ChatGPT-enabled device. One of the top managers recently confirmed that the debut could take place by the end of this year.

Previously, there was information about a wearable gadget that would be placed behind the ear and provide completely contactless access to ChatGPT. However, a new report points to a different scenario: the company’s first product may be a smart speaker with an integrated camera.

According to The Information, the cost of the device may range from $200 to $300. The speaker is expected to be able to recognize objects on the table and analyze conversations of people nearby. The camera, according to the sources, will support biometric authentication similar to Apple‘s Face ID technology, which will allow users to confirm purchases.

The publication also notes that the smart speaker may be just one of several hardware areas the company is working on. Potential products include ChatGPT-enabled smartphones and even a smart lamp. At the same time, sources claim that the glasses are expected to appear no earlier than 2028. According to the report, the company has already created a prototype of the lamp and other experimental devices, but there is no confirmation of their market launch.

The new material does not contain any details about the previously mentioned audio device. The leak described it under the codename Sweetpea. According to the available information, the gadget would resemble wireless headphones with a non-standard design. Unlike traditional models, it would not be inserted into the ear but would be placed behind it, providing background, completely hands-free access to ChatGPT.

If the report’s findings are confirmed, the speaker could appear as early as the end of this year. This is in line with the previously announced timeline from Global Chief Operating Officer Chris Lehane. More details about the device are expected to emerge as we get closer to the likely launch date.
