In the early days of cloud computing, Google introduced the Chromebook more than 15 years ago. This device was designed to work in a browser, and its target audience was mainly students. Now, the tech giant is taking the next step – it has announced a new category of devices called Googlebooks. They will combine Android, ChromeOS, Gemini Intelligence, the Glowbar visual element, and premium hardware.

Unlike Chromebooks, which were introduced mainly in the affordable segment, Googlebook will be based on premium hardware. The new product will run a modern operating system that combines the Android application ecosystem via Google Play with the ChromeOS interface. And, of course, the tech giant could not do without AI Gemini, which will be integrated at all levels of the system.

Among the Googlebook features, Magic Pointer is worth noting. It will be able to offer Gemini-based contextual hints depending on what the user points to on the screen. It’s a bit like the Click to Do feature in Windows 11, which analyzes the data on the display and allows you to perform appropriate actions. For example, the user can hover over a date in an email to create an event in the calendar.

Googlebook will also get the Create your Widget feature, which offers to create your own desktop widgets using natural language text queries. “Gemini can search the web or connect to your Google apps like Gmail and Calendar to create a single, personalized dashboard,” the company said in a blog post. – Planning a family reunion in Berlin? Gemini can bring together flight and hotel information, restaurant reservations, and even the countdown to the event in one convenient place on your desktop, turning it into a truly personalized space.”

The tech giant is also using a concept similar to Phone Link in Windows 11. The new Cast My Apps feature in Googlebook will allow you to run Android smartphone applications directly on your laptop. In addition, the company has introduced Quick Access, which will allow you to browse, search, and insert files from your smartphone directly through the Googlebook file manager. Windows 11 already has a similar feature in File Explorer for working with files on a connected smartphone.

Google has not yet disclosed the full specifications and prices of the new devices, but confirmed that it is working “with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create the first Googlebooks, and they are as passionate about this idea as we are.” The future laptops will come in a variety of form factors, sizes, and premium materials. All models will have a proprietary Glowbar, which will become a visual feature of the new category of devices. The first Googlebooks are expected to hit the market this fall.
