The Rakuten Viber team announced the launch of a new feature – Unread Summary – which is powered by ChatGPT and allows users to quickly catch up on the highlights of chats they haven’t had a chance to read yet.
The “Unread Summary” feature generates a concise summary of all chats with missed messages, so instead of having to review every conversation, users receive a brief summary of their content from ChatGPT. After reviewing the summary – which fits on a single screen – users can mark the chat as read, save it for later, or join the conversation.
According to Viber data, nearly one-third of users have 20 or more unread messages every day, and thanks to the new feature, it will take only a few seconds to review them.

The company emphasizes that data protection remains a priority: ChatGPT analyzes only unread messages and the names of participants necessary to create the digest. Other messages or files in the chat remain inaccessible, so users can view the summaries without compromising their privacy. The feature is now available to users of the Viber mobile app worldwide.
According to the company’s press office, the partnership with OpenAI is part of Rakuten Viber’s broader strategy to integrate AI into everyday services. The launch of this feature also aligns with the Rakuten Group’s “Triple 20” initiative, which aims to improve the user experience and enhance the efficiency of the company’s services through AI.
