Audi has released the A2 e-tron, calling it the most fuel-efficient car in its history. Unlike the brand’s more expensive electric cars, such as the RS e-tron GT Performance, this modest vehicle joins the entry-level compact segment, and its design focuses on achieving maximum energy efficiency. According to tests conducted by the German automaker, the new electric car consumes 12.8 kWh per 100 km and can travel approximately 646 km on a single charge.
This distance is equivalent to about 643.7 km; however, it is important to note that this figure was calculated using the European WLTP testing methodology, whose rules are less stringent than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s MPGe evaluation standards. Audi noted that this range was achieved thanks to a particular focus on aerodynamic performance.
Engineers optimized the body contours, reduced the gaps around the wheel rims, and installed hidden electric door handles that blend seamlessly into the car’s profile. This combination of engineering solutions allowed Audi to reduce the A2 e-tron’s drag coefficient to 0.24.
In terms of specifications, the A2 e-tron is available with three battery options: 52 kWh, 61 kWh, and 84 kWh. The highest-capacity battery pack, thanks to its fast-charging capability, can recharge from 10% to 80% in 29 minutes, while the smaller versions require 24 to 25 minutes to achieve the same result.
In addition, Audi has implemented bidirectional charging technology in this model, allowing it to power external devices – such as e-bikes or laptops – or serve as a backup power source for the home during a power outage. Inside the cabin, Audi has installed an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver and positioned a 12.8-inch touchscreen for the multimedia system in the center of the dashboard.
The A2 e-tron is unlikely to be released in the U.S., as Audi emphasized in its press release that it developed this electric car specifically to meet the needs of European buyers.
According to Audi, pre-orders for the A2 e-tron will begin on September 10, and the official sales launch is scheduled for December. The starting price for the new entry-level electric vehicle will be €38,200, which is equivalent to approximately $44,300.
